The Haifa District Attorney's Office (Criminal) submitted to the city's district court indictments against four defendants (two from Haifa, one from Jaljulia and one from Tarshikha) for extortion by threats.
According to the indictment filed by the prosecutor's office, in December 2023, the defendants began to approach business owners in the downtown area of Haifa, and to demand cash payments from them, sometimes in a one-time manner and sometimes in monthly payments, while making threats of harm to life and property. The business owners had to pay them tens of thousands of shekels.
The payments were required, as mentioned, while threatening the business owners. In one case, for example, they burned a butcher shop, another time they burned cars. In one case, they sent pictures to one of the business owners whose son was sick with a malignant disease, with a coffin next to him.
The threats and the collection of payments continued until May 2024. At the beginning of June, the accused were arrested who were recorded on security cameras, both cameras of the businesses themselves and those placed by the municipality and on the roads.
