The distillery port in Haifa is on its way and will prepare the infrastructure for closing in Zan

(haipo) - The distillery port that will be established in Haifa will replace the refineries and the old fuel terminal. The pier is expected to be ready in about 3 years. In the scenario where the refineries are closed, in accordance with the government's decision, more distillates will be added to the import (mainly fuel for vehicles and airplanes), and therefore a modern fuel terminal is a significant part of the plan to close BaZen.

Israel Ports Company (Hanai) announced on Monday 3/6/24 that Shapir Company won the tender to establish a distillery port in Haifa Bay. The new distillery port will replace the refineries and the old fuel terminal, which was established during the British rule. The pier is expected to be ready in about 3 years.

Safer and more efficient than the existing port

The distillate port will allow the unloading and loading of oil distillates of all types - from crude oil to refined fuel. The port will be safer and more efficient than the existing port and will include a strict standard of protection against strong earthquakes and natural disasters.

Today, an old fuel terminal operates in the lower city of Haifa, within the Haifa Port area and in the heart of an urban area that includes offices and restaurants. This terminal and the operational tank farm adjacent to it are hazards and a safety hazard, and also do not meet the modern standards required to operate a high-quality fuel terminal. The new pier will move the risk away from the city.

LPG import - a modern fuel terminal

The new pier structure will be built in the Gulf Port area, at the berth between platforms 7 and 8, near the chemical terminal. The pier will be 480 meters long, 24 meters wide and 14 meters deep.

Today, the only point of importation of LPG into the State of Israel is through the maritime link of Ktsa in Ashkelon, which is located in the open sea and does not allow functioning in severe weather conditions or a security flare-up in the Gaza Strip. Therefore, it is of great importance to establish a modern fuel terminal near the Gulf port, including infrastructures for the import of LPG that will create a critical surplus for imports also at the Ashkelon terminal, even on bad weather days. This infrastructure will also reduce the number of trucks that will be transported on the country's roads in order to supply the north of the country Distillates and LPG imported from the center and south of the country.

A critical national project for the energy sector

Promoting the construction of the distillery port in Haifa Bay is a critical national project for the energy economy, for infrastructure and transportation, and for the protection of the environment in Israel. Our ability to allow the unloading and loading of distillates and fuels in a continuous and safe manner is an integral part of the continuity of the economy's functioning. This is a port that will also allow us to increase the redundancy as a country and to set up an innovative fuel terminal in addition to the existing one in the south of the country.
