"And Carmel in the sea will come"
(haipo) - About thirty members of the 'Haifa History Association' gathered last Friday (17/5/24) equipped with great energy - despite the heat, for a fascinating tour of Shekmona Beach, guided by geologist Dr. Yael Sena.

Old vixen
Dr. Sena, who worked over the years at the Sea and Lakes Research Institute, as well as in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Oranim College, is a seasoned fox in organizing tours.

sick
We heard from Dr. Sena about the type of soil in the steep Mount Carmel, which descends to the sea, which is hundreds of millions of years old, and in contrast, the soil in Shekmona, which is newer - two thousand to five thousand years old. We also heard from her about the different types of sand and their origins, about the Mediterranean Sea surrounded by three continents Even a narrow opening in Gibraltar.
The color is crimson
Dr. Yael told us about different species of oysters and shells that characterize Shekmona, and one of the exciting details about them we heard was that in the Mediterranean basin and in the Land of Israel they used to produce fabric dyes such as light blue and crimson, which they produced from the sea snail "Argamon" (hence the name of the color). Here For an important factory, if not the most important one, for the production of the dye from the scarlet snail, which was used to dye fabrics for holiness all over Europe.
The Naomi, the main oyster whose shells wash ashore, has also almost completely disappeared.

Explore the city
Dr. Yael is an important and new asset who joined the association for the history of Haifa. The association's members include researchers and knowledgeable people from the city. The association is in contact with parties involved in researching and cracking the city. For example, the association is involved in the annual ceremonies commemorating the Indian cavalry regiment - the last in history, which fought here as part of the British army Against the Ottomans in the First World War.
Joint tours
This month (May 2024) there will be joint tours of the association with the Council for the Preservation of Sites: a tour on the topic of the Hijaz railway, another tour on the topic of the old commercial center versus the new one, as well as a tour on the topic of the new city of D'Ahr al-Amr. All tours will be guided by the association's experts.
