The "Bnei Zion" municipal hospital, the third largest in Haifa, is located at 47 Golomb Ave., in the Hadar Carmel neighborhood and is the modern incarnation of the first Jewish hospital in Haifa.
Hadassah Haifa Hospital
The first Jewish hospital in Haifa was founded in 1922 by the "Hadassa Zionist Organization" and was called "Hadassa Haifa Hospital". He worked at "Beit Itin", a spacious residence on Shmariahu Levin street today.
Although the building did not at all fit its purpose as a hospital, it had 2 departments: maternity and surgery. The spoken language of the staff was Russian. In 1930 the Jewish community in Haifa became a partner in the management of the institution and there the hospital was converted to the "Hadassa City Hospital". This year the hospital had 32 beds.
Rothschild Hospital
In 1942, most of the hospital's departments moved to its current location at 47 Golomb Ave. According to information provided by reader Sh. Pritzker - and for that we owe him our thanks - the architect responsible for planning the building on Golomb Ave. was Sh. Rosov. He was known, among other things, for designing the Rotenberg House, "Hazaken Menharim", and the Dan Carmel Hotel. We would be grateful to anyone who can bring to our attention information on the subject.
Following the Baroness's contribution Ada de Rothschild (wife of Baron de Rothschild) The original name of the hospital was changed to "Rothschild Hospital".
In 1966, the government decided to finance all municipal hospitals from the state budget, but the hospital continued to be named after Rothschild, even though the hospital's management also included representatives of the Haifa municipality, and therefore continued to be a municipal hospital.
Bnei Zion Hospital
In view of the overcrowding in the hospital, it was decided in 1973 to expand it by building a new wing. The planning was entrusted to the architect Emmanuel Kener. Due to budget difficulties, the works were completed after almost a decade, in 1982.
In 1987 Order of Bnei Zion They raised a large financial donation that made it possible to complete another, western, 11-story wing. Following this donation, the name of the hospital was changed to "Bnei Zion Hospital". In the years that have passed since then, more wings have been added to the hospital and its departments have become extremely modern.
Architect Emmanuel Kener
Emmanuel Kenner (1927-2009) was an Israeli architect and artist born in Poland (Krakow). After World War II he studied architecture in Munich and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1951. He worked as an architect in the offices of the architects Abba Elhanani and Aryeh Sharon.
Kener was a key partner in the planning of the new Rambam Hospital in the office of the architect Aryeh Sharon. Thanks to this work, he was appointed to design the new wing of Rothschild Hospital, later Bnei Zion Hospital. In addition to this, he planned the Al Mutnabi school in Haifa for the Arab sector.

Thanks so much for your response.
My father Ali HaShalom, who was injured in an attack inside a bus, was hospitalized in 1938 at the Hadassah Hospital in Shmariahu Levin. Moshe Dayan also lay there when he lost his eye.
As someone who was admitted to the hospital, you discovered a framed letter on one of the walls of the hospital, a letter from Bialik Hagadol, in which he writes that he visited the hospital and was favorably impressed by Sadrinois.
If all the architecture, the investment in the hospital and the whole story of its establishment
This week I was hospitalized, the best doctors, the problem is the quality of the food
According to those hospitalized there, it is beyond criticism, most of them are not
Most of them eat it or buy it with the help of family members.
The quality food is a chimney to complement the patients and all the dedicated care
It cannot be useful without food of a minimum quality level.
Congratulations and thanks to you, Dr. David Bar On, for your uncompromising persistence in illuminating and commenting on public institutions in Haifa. If not - where are we coming?

thank you for your response. Indeed, the authorities have the authority to change land zoning - according to law - if the public interest requires it. Shabbat Shalom!

The Carmel Hospital was established on the basis of a health fund's convalescent home that was there. Bnei Zion was actually established in the heart of a residential area while changing the land's purpose from a residential building to a public institution. But then the Haifa Municipality changed its designation. Fritz everything is allowed.
Indeed the hospital belongs to the state. The salaries go to the Haifa municipality and thus help fictitiously inflate the city's budget by hundreds of millions of shekels (if you didn't know.
The hospital has no land for future development, only the demolition of wings and the construction of a huge hospital tower.
For his environment, he is more than enough if he has Carmel and Rambam by his side.
Transferring him to Carmel Hospital was not possible, huge budgets were invested in protection and sorting.
If the state transfers Carmel Hospital to Kiryat Ata, it will eliminate the medical services for 100 residents of Dalia, Usafia and the ridge neighborhoods. It is very difficult to reach the highest peak, for example from the Almogi plateau, it takes at least 30 minutes.
The state is stripping hand and foot, destroying the periphery, investing only billions in endless protection for threats for which protection is no longer relevant. And now it invests billions to finance 4 month reservists in the north who sit on Twitter all day and conduct right-left battles.
If you thought that as soon as they put on a uniform they won't engage in politics, then you were wrong and the Israel Defense Forces don't have the resources to monitor it anyway.
Those reservists receive billions of shekels - a month - in pay for protecting empty settlements, and patrols for trees and bushes.
With this money they could already build 5 hospitals in Kiryat Ata.
Do you understand the absurdity here or don't you yet?
A country that says it doesn't have half a billion shekels for a hospital in Kiryat Ata because there were expenses for the corona, but a year later spends tens of billions of shekels for airplane sorties to bomb empty houses from the air due to a drone intrusion. Do you realize or not that we are in a delusional state controlled by a corrupt ministry of security that the last thing it provides is security and for itself it builds display towers in Kariya for a billion shekels - but then again, there is no budget for a hospital for a quarter of a million residents of Kariya without one slip from Haifa.
Very interesting
Very interesting article and the drawing is great.
Thanks
Carmel Hospital is in the heart of a residential neighborhood and is a nuisance
At the time it was announced that the Rothschild Hospital contacted the Rothschild family and asked for a donation to the hospital. The answer was: yes, but. We will give the generous donation but on the condition that you change the name of the hospital.
Carmel Hospital will move to Kiryat Ata. Bnei Zion Hospital will move to the Carmel Hospital building. But another vision for the time, planning a hospital is a complicated matter because of all the systems and takes years. They haven't started planning the new hospital in Kiryat yet, so right now we can only fantasize...
The municipality of Haifa sold the hospital to Medina several years ago.
In recent years, the state has invested a huge fortune in strengthening the buildings to withstand earthquakes. The state has no interest in closing such a hospital and therefore decided to move it to Kiryat Ata and develop and significantly expand Carmel Hospital.
Close the hospital and move it to Kiryat Ata.
Also close Carmel Hospital and move it to Kiryat Ata.
Rambam should also be closed and moved to Kiryat Ata.
And it is certain that the Pliman Rehabilitation Hospital should be closed and moved to Kiryat Ata.
Kiryat Ata will change its name to Kiryat Apchi
I agree... all residents of Haifa will move to Kiryat Ata on the condition that we get shiny new apartments (:
Carmel Hospital is one of the shocking hospitals. (May we not need them...) There is no covered parking and the access is terrible. From the parking lot you have to make a real journey on foot, completely impossible for Kaddish and the sick. You can only get to the ER by taxi. Who is the wise man who invented all these stairs And the lack of immediate access to the building that is a hospital!!! They will move him to Kiryat Ata today if they move Bnei Zion to the shocking location where he is today Carmel, this will be a cry for generations.
The location of Carmel is suitable for building a luxury hotel. But no one asks us.
One of the hospitals with the most non-Jewish inpatients and caregivers
Kudos to you my friend Dr. David Bar On for this information. Shabbat shalom and blessed to you.
