(haipo) - A monument created by the artist Moshik Zorea will be placed on the Huldah Promenade in Haifa.
In the unveiling ceremony of the monument, which was held on Friday, 23/2/24, some of the inmates who were on the ship participated. Some of them immigrated in Sweden and some in Italy. The meeting was held the week of the 77th anniversary of the ship's arrival. The immigrants told about the hardships of the road and the exciting arrival on the shores of Haifa. The members of the families of the immigrants told about the way in which they preserve the heritage of the ship. Ofra Eliav, daughter of the commander of the ship Luba Eliav, and Gideon Hilav, son of the captain Gad Hilav, also spoke at the ceremony.
A number of entrepreneurs joined the construction of the monument: Dr. Sharoni Feldman, five of whose family members were on the ship, Eli Nussbaum, whose mother was on the ship, Prof. Ehud Galili, a maritime archaeologist who deals extensively with shipwreck heritage in Israel and around the world and four months ago placed a memorial stone on the seabed next to the ship, Dr. Alik Adler, geographer and trail initiator Hayam and Daniel Gino.
The monument was created by the artist Moshik Zore, a sculptor resident artist of Maagan Michael. The ceremony was held at the statue and not at Bat Galim, because the construction of the boardwalk was not finished. The statue will eventually be placed on the boardwalk. We hope that Haifa Municipality will assist in placing the statue, after the construction of the promenade is finished and it opens to the public.
► Mosheek Zora tells about the inspiration for building the monument:
The Haim Arlozorov ship left Sweden, passed through Italy and from there on its way to Israel.
► Says Habiva Burst who boarded the ship in Italy:
The monument will be placed on Huldah Promenade
The monument is intended to be placed on the section of the Hulda Gurvitz promenade in Bat Galim, in front of the remains of the sunken ship at sea, at a distance of about a hundred meters from it. The monument will be placed in its permanent place when the works on the promenade are finished and it will be opened to the public.
In order to present the monument to those few of us who qualified, a meeting was held without any choice at the craftsman's workshop in Ma'agan Michael, because the saga of the completion of the bridge and the Hulda Gurvitz Promenade continues. I hope that the next mayor will pay attention to this matter and we will be able to inaugurate the monument in front of the remains of the ship.
And also thanks to 190 donors from among the applicants, the second generation and others who are close to their hearts.
Thanks.
This is the ship with which my mother came to Israel from Sweden after World War II. The ship was seized and my mother along with 1300 other immigrants, mostly women, were sent to Cyprus.
I feel a personal obligation and especially in light of the commemorative event that is so important to me and to all the children of Bat Galim who had the privilege of seeing the ship in its entirety, and on the many days when it disappeared from our sight!
I remember that on that day at the time of her arrival, you were at the Kindergarten in Bat Galim, when my mother picked me up with her to go to the beach, when she had clothes in her hands for the illegal immigrants, the spectacle that unfolded before my eyes was that the ship was stuck on a sandbank near the beach of Bat Galim, in an attempt to disembark the illegal immigrants when they were scattered in front of them and all The length of Bat Galim beach British soldiers in order to prevent the illegal immigrants from going down to Mivathim beach. We were quite a group of Bat Galim children when we were all standing on the same sidewalk close to the beach and watching such a sad spectacle that we will not forget to this day!
In 2007 I initiated a huge conference for all Bat Galim children in the halls of congress, which was attended by about 800 people from all over the world!
For this very special conference I was able to invite the late Gad Aif, who was the captain of the ship together with his late wife, and my dear friend Arnon Keren (Kromholz) was able to get the late Yuva Eliav, who was the commander of the ship on behalf of the Palmach, we all had great pleasure To host such important figures that throughout the evening brought up even forgotten ones from that event of the beginning of the derna of the Haim Arlozorov ship until its arrival at Bat Galim beach with a considerable amount of applicants!
The event itself was so special that many stories were woven about the ship, and beyond that Major General Zeev Almog, former commander of the Navy, Mi'el, brought an enlarged photograph of the ship Haim Arlozorov with a special presentation to the members of the committee that was established for the conference that has not been forgotten to this day.
