Too many residents do not know that near their house there is a path, a stream or an ecological space with rare vegetation. The "For Haifa" community has been working for three years to reveal the nature near the house to the residents of the neighborhoods so that you can return and walk on the familiar path. In the Facebook group there are dozens of posts about all the trails in Haifa's nature, look for your trail.
To travel with Ehud Sabirsky
On Friday 19/1/2024 we met for a walk on the "Circle Path Sabioni Dania", as part of the initiative of residents leading trips of the "For Haifa" community. A curious and attentive group was gathered at the meeting place, challenging with questions, absorbing and giving. What fun it was to walk on a warm day, after a few days of rain, when the winter sun plays hide and seek with us.
A number of radish buildings welcomed us right at the beginning of the trail, near the pink tzatrah. The limestone rock of the Carmel, which is scarce and challenging in terms of water content, is a paradise for spice plants from the saffron family. The tzatara is known by the Druze in Carmel as Roman zaatar or Persian zaatar... however, it is not usually included in the Mediterranean mixture we call "zaatar". We met, smelled and tasted the moss found, the main ingredient in "zaatar" further down the path.
On the illuminated slope are the first leaves and flowers of the great chives, and of course, how can you not do without the chives, a black-red bug, with its beak that makes the names of the chives. Everything is green and fresh, and spider web baskets covered with dew beads decorate the track.
arrows of love
We talked about the kinky sex life of the garden snail (hermaphroditism, "love arrows"), and of course we recited Barla Barla Get Out. On the side of the path we met a modest plant hidden in the dishes, a common marigold, which demonstrates a relationship in two separate houses, the male with tall and prominent flowers on one plant and the female flowers on another plant (a monoecious dioecious plant, that's what the botanists call it).
Mediterranean skin
Moss lichens and amazing mushrooms decorated the damp path and tree stumps. In particular, a strange beige spherical mushroom that peeked out of the ground stood out. The mushroom was identified as: Mediterranean leathery, because of the hard leather-like covering that covers the fruiting body of the mushroom. Just further on, Yigal Greiber discovers a tiny mushroom, a hat about 3 cm in diameter, bright red in color that looks like a gnome's house. It was identified as: a conical mushroom. According to tradition, it is identified as Sna. Another small ascent, in a section that is unfortunately lined with construction waste, a challenging set of stairs and we are at the end point.
The route of the path
You can enter the path on Jacob Orland St. (at the point where the fence ends) and finish on public stairs adjacent to the residential building on Mandel Singer St. The path is pleasant for walking, protected, and overlooks Wadi Ben Dor and the Ramat Alon forest. In the middle of the path there is a descent to Nahal Ben Dor which leads the walkers to the Ramat Alon neighborhood and to the entrance to the Technion's paying village.
We will be happy to join the trips
I would love to participate in the trips. There is no.
Is yours Inbal, can you send me a message?
All the best to you my friend Inbal Chen Bergev
well done. Great venture
Thanks to all readers and commenters. Indeed, too many do not go out into the nature close to home and prefer long trips to distant destinations. The western and eastern Haifa valleys and their branches allow us to stay away from the noise of the city, to be attentive to the birdsong and to breathe with the trees within walking distance. What was the landscape of our childhood will not return, but it is our duty to make sure that the existing one is not destroyed, therefore it is important that the next mayor presents a vision for the preservation of Haifa and nature and not building on open spaces! For the pleasure of all travelers, you are invited to continue following our activity in the Facebook group "For Haifa", where there are also updates on tours led by residents voluntarily throughout the year.
Is the trail controlled and suitable for walking for people with some degree of disability?
A welcome initiative. Suitable for the third age and in general.
involves payment?
I have lived in Sabioni Dania for more than 30 years and I didn't know! Thanks.
In a few years the Yuval Alon company will eliminate the path as well, so you have to hurry and walk it (tomorrow already).
The other path I know goes out in front of the buildings on Rehov Tana and goes all the way to the university. not planar.
In our childhood, we walked almost every Saturday in the winter, fall and spring near the houses because we enjoyed many open areas: hills, mountains, paths and we saw all the cloudy vegetation: anemones in the open field and daffodils around the rocks and haviaza to pick and eat and reeds or exos tu cherubim to suck and also tree strawberries and similar... It was an innocent and natural childhood when the personal security of the Azraites in times of peace is high... everyone is now connected to "nature" in all its beauty and natural charm...@
We are partners in the one-year "planting" on the 12th of Shabbat = the festival of the tree...!
Also, what is the length of the track? And what is the dotted line?
The map is not good, without the markings of the street names and in fact does not give an opportunity to understand the route well enough. Too bad.
A welcome and appreciated initiative.
How can I join publications and messages for a trip?
Lovely article. A welcome initiative. Thank you!
Many thanks. It was interesting and informative. And makes me want more... The initiative is welcome
looks very beautiful.
Some technical details please - how long is the route, where do you park the car, is it a return route or do you need two cars?
How magical!!!
Hello, how long is the path?
I forgot to add, kudos to the signage that blends into the landscape, which you took care to install, God bless you. It is perhaps possible to organize a group tour of school children or youth movements, to collect garbage in the valleys, especially on the road leaving Orland St.
Indeed, the trail is beautiful, both in its shortened route, which ends at the stairs near the synagogue, and also in the route that goes down to Ramat Alon and goes up another way, back to the trail of Sabioni Dania. On these rainy days, the route is wet and slippery, there are different types of mushrooms, I recommend walking with walking sticks.
The path starting in Orland on both sides is worth visiting during the blooming season of the daffodils and tulips. All this just tens of meters away from the road. It is such a shame that they are going to destroy everything and build 23-story monsters that will not leave a trace of this natural pearl.
Interesting Inbal. Shabbat Shalom and blessed to you. All the best to you
A welcome and beautiful initiative!!! Well done !!!
