With the help of the struggle and the professional team of the preterm hospital and combined with the tremendous strength and deep faith of her parents, this week, after 135 days of dedicated preterm care, the little preemie Ayla managed to overcome the almost impossible, and was released to the excited applause of the entire preterm team and with great joy arrived home .
It was an unimaginably mighty battle, it was clear to everyone that no one should give up. Finally it did work. Pegait Ayla was released this week at a good time to her home, to the applause of the entire Pegait Carmel team, along with the happy parents.
It all started with an ordinary evening trip in Haifa a few months ago, Hani Klein, a 37-year-old resident of the city, was 23 weeks pregnant, went for a walk with her family. When she suddenly felt contractions, and quickly realized that she was at the beginning of the birth process.
Hani, who is already pregnant with her seventh, immediately realized that this was an unusual situation: "I realized that such signs at week 23 are unusual," she says. "I called the delivery room of Carmel Hospital, and there they told me to come to the delivery room as soon as possible."
Dr. Reuven Kider, the director of Carmel's delivery rooms, who received Hani, performed several tests and informed the parents that the baby was in great danger and that termination of the pregnancy should be considered.
The director of prematurity, Dr. Keren Lavi Nebo, updates that the chances of survival of premature babies born at week 23 are very slim and stand at only 8.7%. In Israel, only 4 premature babies out of 47 premature babies born survived in 2021, according to data from the Gartner Institute, the Institute for Health Research and Policy in Israel
"The greatest danger in premature babies who are too small is the immaturity of all body systems and the premature baby's ability to survive as a result of various complications that develop secondary to immaturity," explains Dr. Lavia Nebo.
After hearing the doctors' recommendation, Hani and her husband Yossi, an ultra-Orthodox couple who belong to the Sert Vizhnitz community in Haifa, also called to consult their mentor, Rabbi Jacob Deutsch.

Dr. Keren Lavi Nevo says: "We connected Pega to the ventilator, she received intravenous nutrition and antibiotic treatment. She dropped to a weight of 410 grams and in the first few days her life was in real danger, but with the wonderful preterm team that cared for her 24/7 and with the endless dedication of the teams, we managed to stabilize her and slowly she was able to get stronger.
One month after she was weaned from intravenous feeding, Fega Ila switched to breast milk feeding. And after two months of dedicated treatments, she managed to double her weight and reached 100 kilo and XNUMX grams.
The nursing director of the infant, nurse Lior Shaked, says: "Our nursing team wrapped the infant and the family in a lot of warmth and love, they are a lovely and special family and a special bond was created with the entire team. We are all happy in their private happiness and happy that we were able to save another little infant and bring happiness to the family."
Dr. Keren Lavi Nebo, director of labor: "Taking care of the little ewe, which is one of the smallest labors born to date at us in Carmel, was a big challenge for all of us. Ayla suffered from eye disease of premature infants (ROP) and was treated professionally and dedicatedly by the hospital's ophthalmologist team. We are happy that we succeeded and wish Hani and the whole family good luck and lots of happiness."

At the Carmel Prematurity, about 360 babies are admitted per year, half of them premature (babies born under 37 weeks) and for 6 years in a row it is the most prematurity in Israel according to the indicators of the Ministry of Health.

Fega Ayla was released to her home at the corrected age of 3 weeks (3 weeks after the original birth date) weighing 3 kilos and 200 grams, breathing on her own without respiratory support and feeding only on mother's milk. Ayla will continue developmental monitoring at Carmel's unique premature development clinic, which includes a developmental prematurity doctor, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist and a dietician, and will also continue to be monitored by the team's ophthalmology clinic in Carmel.
