(haipo) - The Wadi Salib neighborhood was an Arab Muslim neighborhood, which was established during the Turkish rule at the end of the 19th century, on the slope of the mountain overlooking Haifa Bay. The neighborhood was abandoned after the War of Independence, when immigrants from North Africa and Romania arrived in the neighborhood. The difficult conditions, the distress and the sectarian deprivation led to a progressively deteriorating situation, which led to the social unrest that broke out in the 50s.
processes of change
During the 60s, the process of evacuating the residents to newer neighborhoods and improved housing began, a process that lasted until the beginning of the 70s. The neighborhood was almost completely abandoned and its houses were sealed or destroyed. In the 90s, the neighborhood underwent an infrastructure restoration by the municipality and in cooperation with the Israel Lands Authority, as part of which the infrastructures were buried underground, parking spaces were prepared and the public staircases made of stone that characterize the Wadi were restored.
'The Pyramid'
On the side of the wadi is located "The Pyramid" - a center for contemporary art. It hosts art events, exhibitions and meetings of artists in the various fields - painting, photography, cinema, architecture, music and more. The pyramid building was originally built as a school for the children of immigrants in the Wadi Salib neighborhood, which was abandoned in the 60s, but during the 90s a group of artists came to it and began to work and exhibit there. At a later stage, following urban renewal, the school building underwent an architectural facelift and today, as mentioned, art events are held in its spaces and it is used as a studio for the work of 13 artists from Haifa.
The historical heart
The location of the pyramid is a visit to the historic heart of Haifa and one of the unique neighborhoods in the city. At its foot is the lively and long-standing flea market of Wadi Salib, which is a tourist attraction, visited by visitors from all over the country, especially on Saturdays, and above it is the Talpiot market, which is renewed in splendor and the special and lively Sirkin Street, which includes, for example, the Sirkin 21 complex, the Prophets Art School on Yehiel Street, and more The terraces of the pyramid overlook the port of Haifa and from all its spaces the unique beauty of Haifa is revealed to visitors.
My father, peace be upon him, in 1938 was injured in an attack on a bus full of Jews. 3 Jews were killed in the attack. Between the years 1936 and 1939, many Jews were murdered. Just for your information, my father had an Arab acquaintance who informed him that he was going to leave for Lebanon. When my father asked him why, he answered that he was afraid, but he was told that in a few weeks the Arabs would be able to return, and the same Arab suggested that my father leave because it would be very bad for the Jews. That Arab did not return.
Thank you very much Armond for the response that sharpens the feeling of the residents who lived there who were actually expelled
My point of assumption and that of many others is relationships that are based on respect and kindness
There is no other way
But you need to know all the facts
Are people tired of violence and terrorist attacks and the violent Arab image?
And we are tired of the hostile elitist fascist attitude that seems to be doing us a favor by living here
It's a shame they didn't deport all the murderous terrorists who slaughtered Jews endlessly in Haifa - we all remember the massacre of the refineries in December 1947 in which the Arabs murdered 39 Jewish workers in cold blood and over 50 were injured - not a single house should have been left standing in the cursed Wadi Salib from where the murderers came and the massacres were unending Judges in Haifa Jews.
It is better that we remember the real past in which hundreds of Jews were murdered and injured in massacres in Haifa one after the other even before the war and even before the state and even before any other excuse they use today. They lost the battles over attempted holocaust among the Jews of the Land of Israel.. after the accursed mufti went and created a holocaust for millions in Europe and supported it. Today, hundreds of Arab settler families live in the Jewish homes in the neighborhoods of Nachala, Arad El Yehud, Hadar, Yalaj, Kiryat Amal and more... so don't let us be fooled by the history of Haifa.
The outskirts of the old city, which was an impenetrable Kasbah, were planned by the British to destroy throughout the years of the mandate themselves in order to complete the road to the Haifa Mizrah station, which could not be reached from the Allenby road.
Hundreds and thousands of Haifa residents born in Haifa were murdered and deported by the Haganah and other organizations
Even the State of Israel recognizes this
So don't say terrorists
Only an ignorant, emotionally charged and violent human being and a member of consciousness expresses himself as you do
Stop making excuses for the atrocities your grandfathers generation committed in cold blood in murders committed by both sides
Many people like me recognize the mistakes made by the Arabs and this does not give any legitimacy to the actions of the Jewish leadership who systematically expelled and murdered Arabs!!
The Jews murdered and committed no less atrocities
But it's hard for you to admit it
If your assumption is that Arabs are terrorists then there is nothing to talk about with people like you
The mufti did not represent the Arab population, most of whom lived in peace with Jews in Haifa in the 20s-40s
I also interviewed Jews born in the 1920s who lived in peace with Jews in Hadar - Haifa
Even Munir Sharkawi, whom I interviewed, told of good and normal neighborly relations with their Jewish neighbors in the 30s and 40s
But it's easier to claim that everyone sabotages some ignorance and nonsense
Stop blaming the whole world for the holocaust!!
First of all, accuse all of Europe and your country's big company, the USA, of indirectly supporting the Holocaust
The Holocaust is an event that anyone who denies is not human
But you will begin to recognize the disasters of the other people
Yes, there was a systematic murder here, and there was also a planned deportation, and there was planning from before 1948, which also relied on the intimidation of the Arab population
The world was silent and allowed the holocaust to occur and therefore allowed the establishment of the State of Israel in the form it was established in and at the expense of thousands of Palestinians
Are you talking about murder? I don't know where you are from
But my family is from Haifa for generations and they were attacked by Jews and they witnessed many murders from Jews even before 1948
And in 1948 they were deported from their home in Wadi Nissens to the north
grow up!
If the Nazis had come to the Middle East, the Arabs would not have had a better fate!
Hating a person will get you nowhere
And you did not commit any murder
And only for you they made a holocaust
People like you live on a constant poor victim mentality
Don't worry about the consequences of your traumas, you express good to good by killing innocent Palestinians to this very day
You're right
This is a war - a winning side and a losing side
And the Arabs are much to blame
And as soon as the ad goes up
Things change eventually
And you will lose in the end if not soon then in the future because they have wronged you and caused injustice
Such is the way of the world
Its inhabitants were expelled and not abandoned
I am a documentary photographer and went out to interview two people who were residents of Wadi Salib until 1948
One of them is "Monir Sharkawi" who died in Denmark in the meantime
He told me in private how the Haganah had scratched them from their home
He visited in 2009
He found the house where he grew up, sat on a stone and began to cry and tell
What will unite human beings is mutual solidarity
