Diplomatic storm? • A ceremony in memory of the murdered Armenian people in Haifa provokes outrage from Turkey

Are we on the brink of a diplomatic incident?

A large dedication ceremony in memory of the murdered Armenian people is scheduled to be held tomorrow (Monday 20/3/23) in Haifa, in the presence of the mayor, Einat Kalish.

The holding of the ceremony follows the decision made by the city council about two months ago, according to which the Armenian holocaust will be recognized and a monument will be erected in memory of those who died. The ceremony is to be held in the German colony and in the presence of the city's mayor, Dr. Einat Kalish Rotem.

The decision made in Haifa created tensions between Turkey and Israel. As published on the ynet website, the Turkish ambassador in Israel sent a letter on the subject to the Minister of Culture and Sports Miki Zohar. Minister Zohar forwarded the letter to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs examined the best way to deal with the appeal.

Relations between Israel and Turkey are characterized by tensions and have known ups and downs over the years. In recent times there has been some improvement in them, so there is a fear that this will cause them to be undermined again.

It all started with a proposal for an order put forward by council member Nir Shuver in November 2021, in which he proposed to build a square in the city of Haifa, thus commemorating the victims of the Armenian holocaust who were massacred by the Turks over the years
1915-1918. Shovar explained in his proposal that since the State of Israel has not yet recognized the Holocaust of the Armenian people, the square will be a symbolic and not a formal beginning, and he argued that it is important that the residents of Haifa and the residents of Israel know that this is a Holocaust and not a conflict, certainly when there are many Armenian residents he commented that it is important to express support for them.

Invitation to the dedication ceremony of a square and a monument in memory of the victims of the Armenian Holocaust published by the municipality of Haifa

Shuver: "Despite the pressures, you will build a square in memory of the Armenians who perished"

Council member Nir Shuver said today (Sun. 19/3/23) to Lai Fa, that the event will not be canceled no matter how much pressure is applied. "Despite and despite the many pressures, tomorrow you will be inaugurated in a historic event in the German colony in Haifa, a memorial square in memory of the one and a half million Armenians who perished in the Holocaust. I invite the public to 26 A. Ben Gurion Boulevard, as determined by the municipal naming committee and the city council unanimously.

I am proud of our city that has always known how to accept and accommodate all the members of the many and special communities that live here. This is the beauty of Haifa. The city of Haifa and the members of the city council decided unanimously! We stand together by our Armenian brothers. I hope that this year Israel will also join the United States and other European countries that have already recognized the terrible genocide that the Armenians went through.

The Armenian Genocide was a genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire during World War I. The genocide included mass slaughter, deportation and death marches. Even after the First World War ended, the Turks, Kurds and Azeris continued to murder Armenian women until 1923. It is estimated that between one million and one and a half million Armenians were murdered."

The Haifa Municipality responded that the ceremony will take place tomorrow as usual.

  1. Once again engaging in nonsense to create media nonsense.. except for street signs, you are not able to move anything in the city, neither you the mookion nor the doll cliché operated by the hand of Tzuk.
They want urban renewal on a large scale but without financing the transportation solutions that will make it possible. The Haifa metropolis must establish a metropolitan transportation center that will manage budgets of tens of billions of NIS investment in public transportation infrastructure only. No asphalt for the private car, only exclusive bus lanes.
The municipality of Haifa must have a deputy mayor holding a public transportation portfolio who understands the issue with the administrative ability to pressure the government to invest in Haifa as a model for a city that returns to a situation of 70 percent public transportation and only 30 percent cars instead of the opposite situation today.
We have no more time to wait.
It's not possible Carmelite from the 50s and since then? For 60 years, the Carmelite line was not added to the ridge up to Dalia and Assafia. Only the population has increased 4 times.
We need additional public transportation. In the upcoming elections for the Haifa municipality, infrastructure and transportation engineers must be brought in to manage the municipality.

  2. About 10 million Congolese perished and were tortured and punished by amputation by a brutal regime, while sucking the wealth of the Congo?
A nightmare that ended only 7 years before the Armenian Holocaust.
Did the Congo event give the Turks the idea and confidence?

  3. Historical fact, unlike the holocaust of the Jewish people, the Armenians started a rebellion against the Turks. Not everything the Armenians tell is true. And what can I do personally, I had a bad experience with Armenians who worked for me, they stole from my business and gave a large part of the profits as a donation to their church in Los Angeles. In the knowledge of the priest.

  4. This is a historical fact. The murder, this extermination was. And you can't hide it.

  5. Israel must recognize the Holocaust of the Armenian people. One and a half million Armenians were massacred by the Turks. Enough with Israel's hypocrisy. There was an Armenian holocaust and no one will be able to erase either this truth or this heinous crime.

    • Israel angered Turkey because it recognizes the Armenian Holocaust,
