This week we witnessed loud publications about an Israeli study led by Prof. Steven Melnik, who reported that traditional drinking (infusion or infusion) of green tea can cause significant damage to the liver, from inflammation of the liver to liver failure. The damage can be due to hypersensitivity to one of the many chemical components inside the extract.
Being a researcher who has studied for many years the beneficial effects of green tea on brain health and Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, I would like to clarify a few points to calm the spirits.
- Drinking green tea is attributed positive effects in a large number of diseases, such as inflammation, diabetes, stomach pain, cancer, stroke, memory improvement, etc. Green tea, similar to black tea, is produced from a plant called Camelia Sinensis, while the difference between the two types of tea is in the way the leaves are processed.
- Green tea is the second most consumed drink in the world after coffee and its use, including medicinal herb infusions, has been common for thousands of years. Green tea contains several phytochemicals from different groups. The most researched group due to its many health effects is the catechins, very powerful antioxidants, the most familiar of which is EGCG, a cluster of letters that often appears on green tea packages of the leading companies (to the article on the subject).
- However, although traditional drinking of green tea as an infusion or infusion rarely causes medical problems (1 in 10,000 consumers), excessive consumption of green tea extracts can cause harm as previously reported. In many cases, the victims took highly concentrated green tea products in the form of slimming preparations taken in powder or tablets.
My recommendation
It is important to be alert to any health change that occurs in you, whether you attribute it to drinking tea or to another reason, and in any case consult a family doctor.
How many glasses are you allowed to drink a day?
Between 2-4 cups of green tea a day. Many studies have found a connection between drinking green tea in this amount and reducing the incidence of dementia and stroke.
I will continue to enjoy the wonderful taste of green tea infusion and the beneficial effects of those catechins, the antioxidants in the extract that I have researched for many years.
When consuming green tea in large quantities, you need olive oil at the same time.
About 15 years ago, they warned against drinking green tea, due to an increase in blood pressure. There was an article in Macbethon. I witnessed this a few months before, and only after I was exposed to the article did I understand the connection
Lately everything is not healthy, because they decided that we will not drink or eat healthy things, for years we have been drinking green tea, it has only done us good, please stop with all the chatter, drink to your heart's content and don't be alarmed by this nonsense.
All the best to you, Dr. Sylvia Mendel. You are welcome to visit Daliat El-Carmel. Phone 052 5045476
Thank you 🙂
Over the years, each time someone stands up to him, contradicting the one in front of him until a person no longer knows who to believe. So it was with the coffee, and more. And for that matter, are the other types of tea, like the black, okay, or have we not done research on it yet? And who guarantees us that this doctor did not accept bribes from companies that supply and market green tea so that they would not have big losses?
Thank you very much .
🙏🙂
I'm shocked I thought it was good for fatty liver
Many thanks to you Dr.
Question Is your recommendation for 2-4 cups of green tea between them to prevent oily diseases. Here…
Do you mean 2-4 cups or 2-4 cups of green tea?
2. Does the recommendation also apply to those who suffer from high blood pressure? Or for those with high blood pressure, it is recommended to avoid or drink a little green tea.
Or does Yertak tea contribute to lowering blood pressure?
3 Do you have a recommendation for a source for green tea? I was told by a naturopath that green tea from a Chinese origin is not recommended. Do you have a recommendation for a quality source for green tea?
And thank you very much. You are great. Really
Thank you Orit ❤️
Green tea contains caffeine - about a third of a cup of coffee - and other chemicals that may raise blood pressure in people with sensitivity to the ingredients.
Prepare each time with a new thion and let it sit in the glass for 3-5 minutes in order to allow the oxidants, the catechins, to be released from the extract into the liquid
I can't tell you about tea blends, go for what makes you feel good, they all have similar ingredients but in different concentrations,
Lovely Day
Regarding the source, I recommend the "Tea Edenim" store in Tivon (you can also order from them online), the source is indeed from China, but the organic source includes up-to-date laboratory tests for toxins, the taste is excellent and the price is reasonable.
Also, there are several types in the cherry blossom stores in Haifa.
Hello!
Specifically in Israel, the study described 2 cases that were defined as rare, because they drank reasonable amounts, defined as people with hypersensitivity.
In most of the cases described in the literature, there was poisoning from a very large amount of processed preparations that contained high levels of chemicals
Thank you very much for the clarification
I feel great. Green tea affects the metabolism and even strengthens the immune system. Drinks about 3 glasses of miracle drink every day
So have fun!
Thank you doctor, those with liver disease, how much did they drink please?

What about black tea? Thanks. to me.
Hello Eli
Since matcha contains all the components of the leaf, it is almost twice as concentrated, so no more than 2 cups per day is recommended
What about matcha?

The Chinese have been drinking green tea for over 3,000 years.
Dementia, diabetes, cancer, liver, are not common diseases there.
All the diseases mentioned above are mainly diseases of the West.
And the main cause is processed food, air pollution, and lack of physical activity!!!
This is partially true, because today there are studies in the West that also find a connection between drinking green tea, and black tea by the way, and a low incidence of some diseases.
So I proactively recommend leading a healthy lifestyle, which includes drinking green tea.🙂
Thank you very much for the reassuring article. It should also be noted that in the previous article it was emphasized that overuse can be harmful. Like anything that is consumed excessively.
Thanks! This was exactly my intention, to lower the level of hysteria
And again... as in any subject, maintaining measure and balance are key words.
Thanks for the enlightenment of the subject 🙏🏻
Very true Hannah!
