A dark city • What is happening with the street lighting in Haifa?

(haipo) - After about a month ago an article was published about the fact that the busy Check Post intersection has not been properly lit for a long time, many readers responded with sympathy and reported that they experience the problem of the lack of lighting in many other places around the city.

Has the problem been solved?

One of the residents who complained about the lack of lighting at the Check Post intersection even received an answer from the municipality, on 8/2/23, according to which the lighting at the intersection was repaired and is now working properly.

An on-site inspection the next day - Thursday 9/2/23, as well as another inspection on Sunday 12/2/23, brought up a completely different picture, the intersection is still dark, just as it was before.

The municipality's answer to the resident:

As mentioned, about a month has passed, and although it was reported from the municipality that the lighting malfunction at the check post intersection was localized and was taken care of, as you can see, the situation remains as it was.

But as mentioned and as reported by residents, this is not a problem unique to this intersection, and many other areas are not properly lit throughout the city. In some places, the street lighting is not adapted to the season, and the lights are turned on only after hours until dark, or alternatively areas where the lighting simply does not work.

At the southern entrance to Haifa it is repeatedly reported that there is a lack of lighting and entire sections are almost completely dark. Another prominent example is the valley road, which leads to a tunnel (underground passage) in the bay area, where streetlights have not been working for a long time, which endangers road users.

At this time of the year when it gets dark early, and places that are not properly lit are in the dark for long hours every day, there is a real danger to drivers and pedestrians.

Impossible to see the sign

In the attached video you can see that the lighting poles are broken and the place is dark throughout, in the section before entering the tunnel, then inside the tunnel itself, and also after exiting it. The danger, apart from the one that exists from driving in the dark, increases especially in the winter season and during the rains, so the tunnel is flooded and there is no There is no way to notice this, but only when you are already inside it. In addition, due to the darkness, it is also not possible to notice the sign that is placed at the entrance to the tunnel, the one that warns against flooding in the place.

"Some days it's scary to drive there"

Passengers who use this road tell Live here that crossing it on certain days, when it gets dark early and especially on rainy days, is an unpleasant and even scary experience. One of the old residents told Lahi Fe that he does not remember that there has ever been such a situation in the city, when so many parts of it are dark and the street lighting is not maintained. "I cannot understand how a city the size of Haifa suffers from such a serious problem with street lighting. Whole sections of the city are simply dark, for months and months the lighting in them does not function."

Haifa Municipality's response:

"In the lighting on the 'Hakiryot' bridge at the Check Post intersection there was indeed a malfunction caused by a short in the underground feed line. The malfunction was repaired by the personnel of the electricity department in the municipality. Upon receiving the notification of a recurring malfunction, a team of electricians went to the location, which is working to locate and repair the recurring malfunction.

In addition, the municipality is working to renew and repair extremely tall electricity poles that are placed there and upon completion of the works, the intensity of the lighting in the entire intersection will be improved.

As for other streets - Hurricane "Barbara" left wind and rain damage that damaged electrical infrastructure throughout the country, including in Haifa as well. The employees of the electric company and the municipal lighting department are working to repair the damage and will continue to do so as long as necessary."

If you don't know how to drive in changing environmental conditions, give up your license and switch to public transportation - let someone who knows how to drive do it for you.

  10. For years I have been warning that Haifa Municipality does not take care of active control and supervision of lighting/leakage/sewage/filth "just", but relies on A6Zarhip inquiries and residents' complaints. Most of the municipality's employees probably own a car, some of them even own a car financed by the municipality [ie: the residents] and it would be possible to create one-day or two-day or weekly inspection shifts on different routes. If there were - the situation would be different.
