A sad end for the old eucalyptus in Carmelia • Cutting down trees in Haifa ► Watch

Despite the order to stop - the felling of the eucalyptus tree was carried out

Update at 11:50: The tree was cut down, despite the legal advisor's order to stop the operation.

This morning (Sun. 8/1/23) the felling of the old eucalyptus tree at Boaz 4 in Carmelia began, for the sake of a construction project on the spot, despite the order given to preserve it and a long struggle on the part of the residents to comply with the order and save it.

An order was given to stop

After the publication in Hai Pa from 10:15 this morning, and following the appeal of attorney Sharit Golan Steinberg, a member of the city council and a resident of the neighborhood, together with the Carmelia residents' committee, the legal advisor of the Haifa municipality ordered the cutting operations to be stopped.
As mentioned, nothing helped and the 100-year-old tree was cut down.

The original news from the morning, Sunday 8/1/23 at 10:15

(Live here with tree preservation) - The cutting down of the 100-year-old eucalyptus tree on Boaz Street in Carmelia, which was in danger of being cut down, and the residents of the neighborhood fought for its preservation.

As published in Hai Pa, last October the Carmelia Residents' Committee learned that, despite the order given to preserve the trees in the place where a construction evacuation project was approved, it was nevertheless decided to cut down one of the oldest trees on Boaz Street 4 in Carmelia, which, as mentioned, has been around for about 100 years. Because of this, the neighborhood committee sent a letter to the Haifa municipality, demanding an immediate stop to the work, until the matter is clarified. "A home inspection should be done regarding the felling permits and the implementation of the provisions of the law. The light hand with which trees can be cut down in Haifa without examining significant alternatives on behalf of the developer and the municipality is scandalous and constitutes a crime against the residents of Haifa", was written in the committee's appeal.

But despite the objections submitted on the subject and the struggles to preserve the tree while appealing to the professional authorities, this morning, Sunday 8/1/22, its felling began.

Attorney Sharit Golan Steinberg - fighting for the preservation of the old tree in Boaz 4 • Watch

A member of the city council and a resident of the neighborhood, and who works together with the committee to preserve the tree, attorney Sharit Golan Steinberg, said this morning to Hai Fe: "This is a sad day. The contractor rushed to cut down the tree without allowing us to file an appeal on the cutting license with the national forestry official. I turned again to the legal advisor, who ordered that the process be stopped immediately."

  1. This is one of the only things we have to be proud of in this city is the green and the trees…. All the greedy people who only care about money... not even about themselves or their children.

  2. Why does Hai-fa management filter comments that do not fit their agenda?
Is this how a democratic free press works?!

  3. Where is the cry of the greens? I call this whole sad situation one big scandal, and it is our duty to all act together to fire all those responsible for everything that happened here, and beyond that to fine that contractor or sue him for a very high amount so that his pocket will be damaged!
Such a situation cannot arise here where committees on the right hand side sit here and do not know anything about the left hand side!
It occurred to me that the State of Israel is on its way to becoming another Middle Eastern country that will bring many more disasters on all of us in the near future!
Europe is really moving away from us!

  4. All over the city there are trees that the municipality cut down as well as uprooted bushes that the municipality uprooted, I appealed to the public and asked to stop the uprooting of vegetation in the city to no avail. The municipality claims in its advertising that it is replacing the vegetation in the city because of the pigs, but what it is doing is destroying the vegetation in the city without mercy, without emotion, and without planting bushes and trees in place of those that were cut down. I have ample evidence with photos of trunks cut all over town. Too bad there is no one to talk to.

  5. Too bad
We need to write and film the event and broadcast it on all the networks. Unfortunately, eucalyptus trees were also cut down in the Naaman Reserve and there is no one to prevent this, and in the parking lot of
Kiryat Motzkin Kiryat Shmuel train station and no one is stopping me. I turned to the Haifa municipality

  6. The city network destroyed Haifa... there is no law and no justice... I wonder what will be its fate after all the wishes of the residents of Haifa

  7. The municipality should revoke the contractor's construction permit and file an indictment.
    Will we see them???
It is clear that they are doing one together with the greedy entrepreneurs

  8. Hello, and I am very disappointed, it made me feel that the workers who come to cut down, did not understand not to touch the specific tree on Boaz Street. Otherwise it is incomprehensible.

  9. sad. And yet the vegetation is thinned out in favor of the concrete,
For the pigs. They will have somewhere to look. revitalizing

  10. The municipality cuts down trees even unnecessarily in violation of the law and then invents stories. I live in the center of Carmel near the Carmelite station in a building whose front yard the municipality expropriated for landscaping. There were various shops in the building and a garden in front as promised. In this garden there were 3 trees that were decades old. They were planted In the 106s, when Yahav was still the mayor and decided to renovate the center of Carmel, they came and cut them down. In the past, the municipality had already tried to cut them down, so this time they were smarter and by the time my cries were heard, they had already cut the tree trunks into pieces. .
Later they claimed that there was no choice. An agronomist checked the trees and they were sick. This was of course a complete lie. Incidentally, I am a biologist by profession and can testify that they were absolutely beautiful and healthy. The municipality has power and does what it wants. The little citizen had to swallow and keep quiet.

    • Just like now we have to swallow and shut up about all the chaos the new government is bringing upon us. …….and why did I suddenly remember 'Animal Farm' according to George Orwell

    • If the reference is to the building where the Bank Cafe operated - then not all of the area in front of it was expropriated - but a large area in the center on which the building was built was expropriated from the public. The entire area is a public area owned by the church. No building area.

  11. Wow how sad! He was literally executed! It's just a shame to have to fight for such things in general!

  12. It's a shame they didn't cut off the witch's head... Another 9 months of suffering from it.

  13. It is not understood that organized crime penetrated the gatekeepers!???
How do you take down a tree or trees that don't endanger people like that without
Arrest and pay a NIS 30 fine and bring another tree at a similar rate!
Pine trees that tend to fall on houses or cars are not allowed to be uprooted!
Delusional behavior including judicial contempt requires immediate correction!

  14. boiling No words.
    Contempt and loss of way.
Where are the authorities? Where are the gatekeepers?
    What about the public good?
    The entrepreneurs rule.
    shame.

  15. Another "crime" that will be attributed to the duty of the failed mayor of Haifa. Shame!! Shame!!! Shame!!!!
