On the evening of Wednesday, 14/12/22, Holocaust survivor Rachel Hanan, 93 years old, met with the Honorable President of the State Mr. Yitzhak Herzog, at the Mishkan of the Presidents of Israel in Jerusalem and presented him with her book, which was published this week in the German language in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The name of the book: "How I overcame anger and hatred - what Auschwitz taught me about the concept of love!".

Yaron Hanan, Rachel's son, told Lahi Fe about the idea of publishing a book in the German language:

It all started with a big article about Rachel Hanan's story in the well-known German weekly "Focus". The article was published in May 2019. Following the article, the management of the German branch of the largest publishing house in the world - Penguin Random House turned to the reporter and author Tilo Kuma-Pollet, who also wrote this article in the same weekly, to ask her to write a book together with Rachel about her fascinating life and many ups and downs.

According to the publisher, there is an expectation that many readers, in German-speaking countries, will be very interested in the story of her life.

After a delay due to the corona epidemic, the writer Kuma-Pollet arrived in Haifa at the beginning of the year and stayed for several weeks together with Rachel. With the help of the Haifa translator, Nina Van Meeroop, and with my help, he was able to go deeper and encompass the full story, write it intensively and edit it with our help, and thus met the deadlines with no easy effort.

Now, at a good time, this book was published by the printing house in Berlin. Two copies of the book were sent on a special mission to Rachel Hanan and thus she was able to present the book to President Herzog at the ceremony of awarding a Lifetime Achievement Award at the President's House to Rachel's niece, Mandy Kahan, for his impressive work to preserve culture, literature and the Yiddish language.

President Herzog spoke with Rachel Hanan, showed interest and thanked her for receiving the first copy with the personal dedication she wrote to him.

Interest in Europe

Several of the largest media outlets in Germany and Europe such as Der-Spiegel; T-online and the German News Agency (DPA) have already interviewed Rachel and more interviews are expected to take place soon, in German-speaking countries. The goal of the publishing house is to translate, in a few months, the book into additional languages, especially English and Hebrew.

Rachel's story was briefly described in a previous article in Hai Poh:
