"He who is not like me" • On diversity, judgment and choice - opinion column ○ Attorney Ron Aviv

(live here political - social) - Unfortunately, there are those who treat with extreme condescension those who are not like them, and think that they have priority rights over the face of the other and the different.

Actually, I am like that too.

For example, those who do not give the right of way on the road, those who cross a lane without signaling, those who drive on red, or against the direction of traffic, those who step on sidewalks, those who endanger pedestrians...

Such a person is not like me, and I, in most of my condescension, react towards him in a harsh way: with anger, disdain, with a strong desire to prove him, limit him and punish him, and all this, based on the difference in his behavior, a difference that stems from his choice to act as he did.

On the other hand, I will never judge others based on something that does not depend on them, such as their last name, place of birth, identity of their parents, the religion or nationality they were born into...

Disqualifying a person based on such criteria, based on things he had no choice in, has a precise word in Hebrew:

You can be jealous of racists: with them everything is easy, everything is clear: every detail in the world is either black or white - just like with the Smurfs, for whom everyone who is blue is good, and everyone who is black is bad.

With the racist, with the same childish ease of the Smurf Scouts, if you are a member of nationality X you are a good person, and if you are lucky enough to be born into nationality Y, you are not a good person, you do not deserve rights and you should be restricted, you should be removed from my environment, and more and more "justified differences based on differences".

People (Photos: Sharon Label)

Of course, the identity of the variables, X and Y, must be placed in the formula according to time and place; Everyone will agree, for the sake of the example, which are the missing items that should be placed when we are dealing with the Europe of the late 1930s and the first half of the 1940s, but if we try to place data in this equation in relation to the here and now, the debates will begin...

On the other hand, for those who do not believe in judging based on criteria that are beyond a person's control, it is really not black and white, nor fifty shades of gray, but a multitude of shades and countless subtleties:

Is a person's upbringing something that "depends on him"?
Is his sexual orientation elective?
Does the fact that a person is female, which certainly does not depend on the person himself (or herself), change his essence as a person, compared to a male?

We've already gone back and changed:
"He who does not learn from history is doomed to repeat it."
Only no one said, ever, that in the remake we will be in the same role again...

  1. I agree very much with the interpretation.
    Racism and intolerance for others
on a variable basis..turning our lives into hell
And as a result, a third temple was destroyed..and as mentioned in the sources, the destruction of the Temple was caused by free sleeping and civil war.
    Peace from the Lebanese border

  2. A sensitive article. Thanks. In response to "stopping the discrimination against women in the ultra-orthodox parties", you can get what you want by taking community centers, schools, parking lots and all the municipal infrastructure out of the hands of the municipality. There is no need for municipal funding for anything, thus neither orthodox nor liberal parties will be able to tilt budgets according to political considerations.

  3. Who is not like me. For the mayor of Haifa, the results of the elections brighten his face. why?
Shas and Torah Judaism are the only ones left in the cliché minority. Now we will get Shas back in the Ministry of the Interior.
And once again there will be an opening for the cliche minority in the city council to continue to bully the majority of the residents. Close another community center and school and turn it over to the ultra-Orthodox. Those ultra-Orthodox are not racists, and do not want to offend the majority. They simply do not think that the secular public should be treated and taken into account. They are "captured babies" or "Messiah's donkey". They are neither bad nor inferior simply as ultra-Orthodox When he comes to distribute budgets, he distributes them
According to the following key: this is ours, and this is not ours. That which is ours we give double and multiplied, and that which is not ours we can take and take from it.
The same goes for the inclusion of women in ultra-orthodox parties. They are not inferior, God forbid, it is simply a place in the kitchen to prepare a meal for their politician husband, or to bless him who cannot waste his time helping with the housework because he only has to study Torah, while his wife - he credits her, that she will serve him nicely with a hot meal on the table, after she returns from her work , after she finished taking care of the children.
I don't understand how the women of the ultra-orthodox public are prepared to continue living as less influential (at the ballot box, you need them to maximize mandates, otherwise you can be sure that they wouldn't even get the right to vote in the ultra-Orthodox public...)
This is not racism or condescension. It is the desire to bring the Hasids to stop their closed and problematic way of life in every sense under the pretext of religion. In the Arab world, women already drive, vote and are elected to parliament. It turned out that the Islamic commandments do not prohibit, but rather the male interpretation (rabbis, muftim) created the prohibitions from the religion. I suggest that the women of the ultra-orthodox public rise up - not against the state, but against the rabbis who forbid them to participate in the future of the state. If there are no ultra-Orthodox women in the Knesset, it is not because of the Torah, it is in general its distorted interpretation.
And here is the place of the general public to help those women: to legislate an obligation to include 30% women in each party in the top ten. If the ultra-orthodox parties refuse - let them set up their own parliament with discriminatory laws. We do not need to give and finance more of the tax payer's money such discrimination, which is based on nothing and nothing

    • The women of the ultra-Orthodox sector integrate into the labor market today at a higher rate than the western Israelis,
Their families also pay taxes, and their children study core.
Everything appears in the publications of the Central Bureau of Statistics, and this is not a new figure from this year, but a trend of years that expands from year to year.

      Did you know?
Require by law the integration of women before a certain quota - whether in the party, the work environment or a youth movement -
This is one of the most chauvinistic steps one can take.
There is nothing more shameful for women than to fulfill a role given to them, if only because they have a womb,
We can get there ourselves, thanks.
