Parents of the 'Scoops' children and the residents of the houses next to Leo Buck: "Who assures us that we are safe from asbestos?

(haipo) - The parents of the Boy Scouts' Nest campers and the residents of the houses next to Leo Buck High School in French Carmel fear the possibility that the removal of asbestos will affect them as well.

Following the publication, I live here

Update for 17:45: The scout movement told Lahi Pa that following the publication, another message was given to the parents of the campers, according to which until an official approval is received that the nest structure can be used without fear, no activity will take place there.

Today (Thursday 25/8/22) during the afternoon it was announced in Chai Fe that the scout movement building adjacent to Leo Buck High School in Carmel Srafati is back in operation. This is a building that belongs to the Haifa municipality. Parents of children in Scouts asked to see a municipal permit for activity in the building, but no such permit was found. Some of the parents claimed that because of the close proximity between Leo Buck High School and the scout nest, they are not ready for the children to come to the activities.

In the end, the Hoshan Rahman and Iti Levy centers issued a letter to parents in which they update that the activities of the children up to the 9th grade will be in playgrounds in the neighborhood and the children of the older 10th-12th grade will continue to come to the activities that will take place in the building.

"Due to many requests, we decided to start the year in several different and more distant activity areas. Younger classes (Wednesday-Friday) from the Tscheranhovsky and Leo Buck elementary schools will hold their activities in the Edmond Peleg public garden. The students of the Ramot school will conduct the activities in the school area Youth classes (7th-9th) will hold the activities in the area of Leo Bak Middle School. The activities in the building will be reduced and will not be mandatory activities."

"This is an urban building, why don't they check whether it is a health hazard or not?"

"I don't understand what's going on," says a mother to a scout camper, "If the building is not safe, then no one should enter it. If there is a permit from the municipality to carry out operations in the building, the parents need to show us the permit so that we can consider whether to send the children Ours. My son was very disappointed that his friends are going to operations and I don't allow him. I talked to the instructor and to those above him, and they did not have permission to show me. It is impossible to understand the situation. A building adjacent to Leo Bak High School is operating and there are no clear answers? Now will they start Having activities in the structure, which are not mandatory activities, is a very problematic situation. The instructors who conduct the activities in the structure do not have parents who take care of their health?

The parents of the division are interested in the tests and are ready to finance

Parents of students who will start the school year at Leo Buck Youth Division in about a week (grades 32,000 to 300), have begun collecting funds for an independent inspection of each of the middle school classes. According to an inquiry made by the parents, an inspector on their behalf will cost about 600 NIS, so the price per parent should range between XNUMX and XNUMX NIS. The more parents agree to pay, the lower the amount each will have to pay.

The parents' committee contacted the parents of the youth division in order to check which of them would be willing to pay for the test, in the message before you:

"Hello everyone,
In light of the findings of asbestos fibers in the high school and elementary buildings adjacent to the division, we think that before we send our children to school, tests should also be conducted in the division's building. Since it seems that the management and the municipal and governmental bodies do not intend to conduct such an inspection, we are interested in organizing a private inspection financed by the parents. To this end, we will be happy to check the willingness of parents in the various classes in the division and we would be grateful if you could send the following questionnaire to the classes."

As I recall, two months ago the process of removing asbestos from the ceiling of the building began at Leo Buck High School. Every few days, tests are held on the spot, in order to find out whether asbestos fibers still remain as a result of the process. There is a long distance between the high school and the middle school, which is located at 71 Tscheranhovski Street, despite this, many parents are interested in checking.

"I have no problem paying to make sure my daughter is safe"

"I have no problem paying 300 NIS to know for sure that my daughter in middle school is safe," says a mother who is already her third child at Leo Buck School. "I feel that we are only at the beginning of the crisis, and I have no doubt that it will not be possible to return to the high school building this year, I also have a son there. We are 1200 parents in the high school building, and I have many friends who tell me that now they are going to study at Gordon College anyway and everything is fine. But in November they intend to join the fight and not allow the children to return to high school. We also hear difficult things from teachers. I'm not talking about teachers who left the high school at the end of the year, maybe even in recent years, teachers found better opportunities and left, but we did hear 3 teachers say that they ask us parents to fight so as not to return to the high school structure, because they cannot be part of the struggle. At the same time, I have no doubt that there are teachers who have no problem returning to teaching in high school."

"The middle school building is municipal, you should ask the municipality to carry out an inspection"

CEO of Leo Buck Rabbi Ofek Meir, who was asked about the middle school building, replied to the parents that the middle school building is a municipal building and therefore it is necessary to contact the Haifa Municipality and ask them to do an inspection of the building it owns.

And what about those who live near the high school?

The parents' request to check the structure of the middle school raises questions. Between the middle school and the high school are many residences, with hundreds of residents. Before the removal of the asbestos, the tenants were asked, to be safe, not to open the windows on the days when the asbestos was removed. Now if you're checking out 71 Tscheranhovski, why not check out other houses on the street, which are closer to the high school?

Is there certainty regarding the safety of the tenants who live near the school? Are tests necessary to know this? And if so? Whose responsibility is it to carry out and finance them?

"If we are told to close a window, does that mean there is danger?"

"I lived close to the high school before the asbestos removal process started," says the resident of the neighborhood, who is the mother of a two-year-old toddler, "I tried to understand what the consequences of such a process being carried out so close to me and my daughter and who is supposed to take care of us. This is a part, because the parents of the students had The administration of Leo Buck, when they wanted to get answers to questions, but we didn't really have anyone to turn to. In short, I asked questions and felt that the students were treated, but the residents much less. I have responsibility for my daughter, so I just moved. From the most genuine place I can To say that I didn't feel like anyone cared what was happening to us. If they say to close a window, then is there a danger? I couldn't understand and told myself that I don't take risks. I don't regret the effort of moving the apartment, health comes first."

The municipality's response to the article will be attached when received.
