Recently, 24 diagnosed and 6 suspected cases of West Nile fever were reported to the Department of Epidemiology at the Ministry of Health.
This is an earlier than usual increase in virus activity and morbidity. In parallel periods in previous years, reports of 6-13 cases were received in the Epidemiology Division.
One death of an 87-year-old patient who suffered from underlying diseases (cardiovascular and metabolic diseases) was reported.
Most of the cases were reported from the Central District and the Tel Aviv District, and a few cases from the Haifa District and the Southern District.
background
The mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are common throughout the country.
It should be noted that populations with a weak immune system, such as - adults, patients and small children, are more exposed to the disease.
In Israel, a joint system is being operated by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Health to detect the spread of the virus and to work to reduce the incidence of West Nile fever in Israel.
