The Templar parish in the center of Carmel
By walking a few hundred meters from the water tower in Heine Square, you reach the heart of the "German suburb" of the central Carmel.
Simultaneously with the construction of the German colony in Haifa (1868), the Templars aspired to build a profusion of Kit houses in the central Carmel area. This ambition was met with the opposition of the Carmelite monks who ruled these lands. However, in 1887 Friedrich Keller, one of the leaders of the Templars, after whom Keller Street is named today, was able to convince the Carmelites to sell part of their land and thereby enable the establishment of a "German Prover" (1890) which included several hotels and hostels.

Pross's hotel
One of the most impressive buildings was the hotel of the Prous family (1893) who also owned a hotel in the German colony. The building is characterized by elements of the Templar architecture - tiled roof, arched windows and wooden shutters, round ventilation openings, etc. - and above the entrance to the building is even today the inscription "Welcome" in German.
House of Rothschild
After various incarnations, in 1948 the building was purchased by James de Rothschild and the hotel first became the offices of the Pika company under his control. In 1959, with the transfer of the building to the Haifa Municipality, the building was converted into a culture house and became known as the "Rothschild House".
Beit Hecht
In the 90s, the building was purchased by the Hecht Foundation and after extensive renovation and renewal (2001), changed its name to "Beit Hecht" and continues to operate as a cultural and art center where exhibitions, concerts, lectures, workshops and classes are held.
Dear Live Here readers, I would love to hear from you Ideas or recommendations for the continuation of our trip among the houses and historical buildings of our special city Haifa.
Missing from the article about the Hecht house were the previous owners of the house, after the house was sold by Pross to the second tenant Pastor Schneider who later founded the Carmel Mission and built himself a house on the corner of the Tashbi today the house is known as the Carmela Mahon, the next tenant of the Hecht Hecht was Frances Emily Newton. She hates Jews and also hates the British. In 1938, while on national leave in England, she was asked by the High Commissioner not to return to Israel. She sold the house to the PKA and the story is well known. Neoma
