Talfiot market in Haifa - we have no protection here • The demonstration planned for Friday was cancelled

A protest planned for tomorrow (Friday 10/6/22) aimed at calling out the insecurity experienced by the residents of the Talpiot market area, was canceled under pressure from the merchants.

According to the merchants in the market, holding the demonstration will harm their livelihood, especially when it comes to Friday afternoon, when many customers come to the market. As far as the merchants are concerned, there is no reason for the demonstration to take place in the Talpiot market, and precisely on Friday.

"It has nothing to do with the market"

"I checked with my lawyer this whole matter of the demonstration," one of the market traders told Lahi Pa this morning. On a dog, no less. If that's the case, there's no reason to hold a demonstration in the market, after all, these beatings could have happened anywhere else in the city, and by chance a demonstration was scheduled in the Talpiot market."

"to voice our cry"

The organizer of the demonstration announced in a post on Facebook that the demonstration was canceled and explained the reason for this, adding that she hopes that at least the mere intention to hold a demonstration raised the issue to public awareness, if only a little. The motivation for holding the demonstration is the cases of attacks and violence that have occurred in the market in recent times.

The traders in the market demanded to be partners in the demonstration plan and also insisted that it take place on another day, in the middle of the week. The organizers of the demonstration claim that there is no point in demonstrating in the middle of the week, when the market is almost empty of people, nor in front of the municipality or the police, who, according to them, are aware of the situation. The organizers, who explain that the purpose of the demonstration is to raise the public's cry, put the issue on the agenda and stop the cover-up, according to them, and therefore Friday is the most suitable for this.

"We are not protected"

The demonstration is intended to call on the authorities to take care of the security of the citizens in the market: "We are interested in security in the streets of the market," reads the call to go out and demonstrate, "The police and the municipality are ignoring the situation, while people are being harmed. We will protest that we are not protected and protected here. We have no proposals for streamlining; those who believe in security And Seder, who does this in the Carmel neighborhoods, will know how to do it in style as well. A silent protest with signs is planned during the rush hours of the market."

Yesterday (Thursday 7/6/22) the police arrested the person who attacked Eyal Levkovitch, a resident of the neighborhood and the owner of the "Goldmond Books" store, in the market complex.

As I recall, the incident took place last Tuesday, when Levkovic reported that he commented to the assailant that his dog was without a mouth guard, and the latter attacked and injured him with an object.

The Haifa Municipality responded:

The municipality of Haifa invests many resources and efforts in raising the sense of personal security of the residents in general and in the Talfiot market complex in particular. In the last two years, the municipality, under the guidance of the mayor, has invested many budgets to restore the infrastructure in the Talpiot market complex, when, among other things, the lighting was increased, security cameras were deployed in the market and the enforcement system was strengthened. It should be noted in this regard that even in the incident of violence this week, the inspectors protected the attacked with their bodies and thereby prevented the continuation of the attack which could have ended in an even more serious manner.

Moreover, the municipal inspectors do not have the legal authority to act in relation to crime incidents, and the inspectors are often helpless in the face of criminal incidents with no practical ability to respond. Due to this fact, the mayor, even after the events of May 21, turned to the Ministry of Internal Security, with a request to assist the municipality in financing a municipal police unit, within which the inspection forces will operate together with the police forces, thus constituting a significant force multiplier for deploying forces in the field.

In this context, it must be said that the cooperation between the Municipality of Haifa and the Israel Police is close and ongoing, but the ability to channel resources in an extensive manner depends on government assistance focused on the issue of dealing with crime.
Yesterday (Thursday), following the recent events in the Talfiot market, the mayor sent a return appeal to the Minister of Internal Security, MK Omer Bar-Lev, in which she once again asked for assistance in funding a municipal policing unit.

The police response will be attached to the article when received.

  1. I wrote to Klish, dismantle this market and open new centers
For those who want to be a merchant!
Before we finance the renewal of the market!

    • post Scriptum. Not personally in the responses to the newspaper on the subject of market restoration in planning.

  2. Why are they all anonymous?
Anonymous quotes should be reserved for exceptional cases and even then it is advisable to give a reason why.

  3. The Municipality of Haifa does a lot for the Telpiot market in Haifa. Shabbat Shalom.

    • Certain people in the municipality are doing what they can. The 'municipality' is a list of sentences/laws. it's all relative. The priorities of society as a whole are distorted. The rich will get into unbearable stress when he has no parking and the poor at the same level of unbearable stress, because everyone has their own bag, but the poor have twice as hard existential problems. cannot be compared. Resources are not distributed ethically.

  4. Unable to respond. You do not approve my comments. And I can't 'connect' because I'm not 'registered'. But there is no option anywhere in the menu or on the entire site to register.

  5. Say there is no budget! And there will be no budget! Because you are busy with the problems of the rich!
"The lighting was increased" by replacing a few more burnt out bulbs. Everything is dark!
And there is not a single security camera where dozens of drug stations are concentrated in Barzilai and Bilo despite the fact that they were expected to be installed two years ago!

And answers like: "There is no such thing as 100% security" and "Cameras do not prevent 100% of crime" are not respectful answers to give to people who suffer from horrific violence on a daily basis!

  6. There is violence from some of the traders themselves. A merchant shouted at me something like I should go back to my villa and that he is not ready to sell me goods. And as above, my elderly neighbor tells about the attitude. He said that there are many prisoners in rehabilitation who work there for rent in booths and that most of them do not live in Haifa.

  7. In my opinion, it is possible to demonstrate near the market on Halutz Street and not harm the livelihood of the business owners in the market.

    • There is concentrated crime in the market area and on specific streets there that existing investors do not want to advertise in order not to drive away more potential investors. And so they wanted to demonstrate in the market itself so that a slightly wider target audience that comes to the market and not to the vanguard would know. Because they usually park under the market. And I don't believe the merchants, because it is known that most of them are employees and they are not interested in the profits of the property owner. And even if so, this is again the cover-up of crime because "money is more important than others"

  8. We will not reach this market because it is not a market.
He collects baskets with a minimal lack of attention to sanitation, security and sanitation of checking the goods and where they come from
We will not finance anything there until there is a market that tourists can be brought to without being disgusted by what we are already used to doing there, from drug ATMs to the trade in smuggled and expired goods.
We are done funding people who lend a hand to the crime populations in the area (or pay them sponsorship)

  9. Very sad
And the dealers don't realize that they are losing a lot of customers because of the violence
I don't go there anymore because of some cases I've seen
Until there is no sense of security and education for the residents

  10. There used to be a police station in the market and there was much more security. Now scary

  11. That is, the municipality confirms that it failed to obtain budgets and mobilize the government ministries in order for them to help. conclusion?
