"You took the garbage with you - you went a long way"
'Carnival of the Masks' - the quality of the environment in a crisis the climate
In a few days there will be a national competition between the Pis clusters participating in the "Masquerade Carnival" program. The program is designed to promote environmental quality in light of the climate crisis. The leader of the program in Israel is Dr. Michal Zion, in Kiryat Yam the leader is the director of Eshkol Pis Kiryat Yam - Ms. Miriam Elbaz-Marcelli. The leader of the 'green school' at the middle school "Rodman" in Kiryat Yam is Ms. Racheli Shafaran.
"Pass it on"
"At the beginning of the current school year, we held an activity that revealed the main points of the program, which aimed to emphasize the personal responsibility of the students to take the trash with them and not leave it in public spaces," said Ms. Miriam Elbaz-Marcelli. "Children and adults expect someone else to clean up after them both at school and in general, in the environment. We believe that children can internalize the messages and pass them on."
Personal responsibility of each and every one
"Rodman" students were exposed to global environmental problems, the climate crisis, and local environmental problems.
A team was formed that formulated a slogan that distinguishes it: "You took the garbage with you - you went a long way."
Later, the team met in Eshkol Pis, the 6th grade students from the elementary schools: "Alumim", "Amirim", "Or Avner", "Yamit" and "Orim". The students of the team held an outreach and training activity to convey the messages to other students. The 6th graders got all the students active in their school.
The students of the team went out to the community in the city, conveyed the message to the residents and gave them garbage bags with the slogan. "The goal is to always have a trash bag in your bag and take it out when needed."

Consumption and waste damage
"The children realized that the garbage that accumulates in public spaces causes not only aesthetic damage and an odor hazard, but also damage to the world of living creatures, who find their death by suffocation or from pollution due to eating the waste. In addition, the children recognized the importance of reducing consumption in order to reduce the amount of waste, because in the processes of decomposition The waste emits methane gas, which is one of the greenhouse gases responsible for the climate crisis and global warming." "This plan is part of a larger plan, which is connected in Kiryat Yam to the desire to ban the use of disposable utensils on the beach, and we are moving forward together with the authority to draft a municipal bylaw on the matter."

spread the message
The mayor, Mr. David Ibn Tzur, came to Eshkol Pis, met the "Rodman" school team and the student representatives from the elementary schools that participate in the program and signed the agreement that calls for the reduction of littering in the public space. The principals accepted the agreement and, together with the students, will continue to pass the message on.
