Heavy bombs: 23% increase in fatal road accidents involving buses and trucks
Green Light Association: Urgent action must be taken to implement the digital tachograph, which will significantly reduce the long working hours of drivers and reduce road accidents.
Three people were killed and six were injured in an accident between a truck and several vehicles on Route 3703 between the towns of Ezrikam and Be'er Tovia, on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. Erez Kita, green light:
The high involvement of heavy vehicles in fatal road accidents constitutes one of the main weak points in road safety in Israel. The heavy vehicles have unique characteristics that intensify and increase the severity of the injury in the event of a traffic accident. To this must be added the driving conditions of the drivers who drive for many hours, tired and exhausted. Despite a number of committees that convened and dealt with the issue in recent years, many conclusions were not implemented at all and lessons were not learned. Urgent action must be taken to implement the digital tachograph, which will significantly reduce the long working hours of the drivers, as well as driving at excessive speed. The enforcement system of the Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety and the police must be strengthened and increased in order to create a deterrent among drivers who drive abnormal trucks.
The leading cities in the number of road accidents involving buses and trucks:
- 132 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in Tel Aviv-Jaffa in 2021. In the last decade, 1,287 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in the city.
- 96 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in Jerusalem in 2021. In the last decade, 1,223 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in the city.
- 46 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in Haifa in 2021. In the last decade, 522 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in the city.
- 36 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in Ramat Gan in 2021. In the last decade, 284 traffic accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in the city.
- 30 road accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in Holon in 2021. In the last decade, 268 road accidents involving buses and trucks occurred in the city.

One in four is killed in an accident with a bus or truck
Heavy vehicles - the involvement of trucks and buses in road accidents in Israel - and in particular in road accidents in which there are serious injuries or deaths - is relatively high compared to other types of vehicles, and Israel's situation in this area is worse than most developed countries.
One in four people killed in road accidents in 2021 was killed in an accident with a bus or truck. The heavy weight of the vehicle, the speed of travel and the size of the vehicle are among the main factors that aggravate the injury. In addition to this, the correctness of the vehicle is of great importance to the driver's ability to avoid a traffic accident.
27% of the buses in public transport that were inspected by the safety vehicles of the Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety and the Israel Police in 2021 were found to have defects and 57% of the trucks that were inspected were found to have defects, some were even taken off the road by towing.
The way to reduce traffic accidents involving buses and trucks begins with the definition of a comprehensive entity that will receive responsibility and appropriate measures for the transportation and coordination of all issues related to the handling of the safety of heavy vehicles. The Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety, the Ministry of Labor, and the HRL should work together to increase the number of heavy vehicle drivers, both by streamlining licensing processes and by improving their working conditions.
The Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Internal Security, the Israel Police and the Israel Defense Forces must cooperate in order to regulate as soon as possible the use of a digital tachograph that will prevent working hours beyond what is allowed by law. The Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety must work to increase the effectiveness of inspections for heavy vehicles Integrating arms of all operations will lead to a reduction in traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles and will save human lives.
Sure? They think that because they are big they are allowed everything on the road and it doesn't matter what happens to the small cars and drivers? Something must change urgently!!!
