Streets and names • Naot Peres neighborhood in Haifa

It turns out I was wrong

I don't like to make mistakes and even less I like to admit my mistakes, but regarding Naot Peres neighborhood I was wrong. Over a decade ago, I worked for a local newspaper and I used to do articles about Navot Peres even before the first tractor hit the ground. The plan was to build 6 complexes by 6 different contractors and thus get a neighborhood with about 1,100 units in the Freud slopes. I remember wondering to myself who would want to live on the edge of the city.

many want

Today it can be said that a lot of people want to live in Naot Peres, and that is probably why 4-room apartments with a balcony are sold for the unimaginable price of 2.2 million NIS. Moreover, if you take a short drive in the neighborhood, you can see that it is very beautiful, located a meter from the sea, from the train and from "M and it is really a part of Haifa. At the same time, those who live in the Naot Peres neighborhood will have some neighbors soon. There is an intention to build Naot Pres B and add over 5,000 units in two phases.

Not a bad deal

There are also residents who don't like the neighborhood that much. They complain about the street traffic, about the difficulty of getting out of the neighborhood on foot and about the traffic jams there when there are soccer games. In any case, a decade ago apartments on paper in the neighborhood were sold for a price of about a million NIS, whoever bought an apartment there at that time made a good deal.

Navot Peres in memory of Prime Minister and former President Shimon Peres (Photo: Michal Yaron)

Shimon Peres

The Naot Peres neighborhood was named in memory of the one who was the assistant of David Ben-Gurion, the Prime Minister and President of the country after the flop of the president before him, Moshe Katsav. Shimon Peres has been a part of Israeli politics for 60 years and is undoubtedly a man of many rights. Foreign sources attribute to him the establishment of the cloth factory in Dimona. For years there was a severe political rivalry between him and the late former Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, but in the end of their days relations improved. Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize with Rabin and was a great believer in peace. He also strongly believed in innovation throughout his life.

"Loser"

Despite all his achievements, the image of the loser stuck to him, because in every possible match he failed. After Rabin's murder in November 95, he contested for the Prime Ministership against former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and despite the public sympathy after Rabin's murder, he lost. The first time he contested for the presidency against Moshe Katsav, he also lost. Only after Katsav's exploits became clear, Peres won the presidency and enjoyed the position that brought him together with all the world leaders.

Barbara and friends

Personally, I must say that for some unknown reason I received an invitation to Peres' 90th birthday. The birthday was in Rehovot and it was an excessive trip in my husband's eyes, we announced that we would not come. When it turned out that for Barbra Streisand, Sharon Stone and Bill Clinton it was not considered that far, it was already too late to regret it and so it turned out that we did not hear Streisand sing for the award and probably never will. The cost of this party was very large and provoked a public protest, even though the state did not finance it.

while alive

In recent years, Haifa has been naming streets and neighborhoods after living people, and this was also the case with Peres when the neighborhood was named after him. After that, an equally impressive event was held when the Chinese sculptor who erected the statue at the entrance to the neighborhood arrived. Of course, the statue caused a small commotion as pious people thought it was an immodest statue, but in the end everyone relented.

Here they recycle

Several recycling centers are scattered in the neighborhood. Today, the whole section of recycling and separating the garbage according to its components is gaining momentum, and since it is a new neighborhood, recycling centers were established in advance that allow the garbage to be separated.

Hod Street (Photo: Michal Yaron)

glory

The meaning of the name of the street - Hod, is beauty, splendor or magnificence.

Ezer Weizman Street (Photo: Michal Yaron)

Sderot Ezer Weizman

The street was named in memory of the seventh president of the State of Israel and who was before that also the commander of the air force and the minister of defense. Weizmann is the one behind the phrase "the best for flying and the best for pilots", which represented a world view that was prevalent in his time, according to which women in the IDF and in general can mainly be an auxiliary force to men. Since then women have revolutionized the army in general and today there are both female pilots and soldiers, who serve in other combat roles And women still have a long way to go until the desired equality is achieved.

Yifa Street (Photo: Michal Yaron)

splendor

The meaning of the name of the street - Yifa, is beauty, ornament and splendor. The view from the neighborhood is first of all the sea. The neighborhood is located so close to the sea that from the balconies you can almost see what the lifeguard sees when he looks at the swimmers in the water. When you look the other way, you can see the Freud road curving and reaching the top of the mountain - a mansion and the center of Horev. In the future, houses will be built between Neot Peres and Ramat Eshkol, and the mountain, which today is empty of houses, will be filled with housing. Today there are only disgruntled residents, whose parents bought land 60-70 years ago, but infrastructure and roads were never built there, and therefore over the years they could not build And they could not earn a shekel from the land they inherited.

The view (Photo: Michal Yaron)

Green for now

From the neighborhood you can see Harofeh Street and the Carmel Medical Center. Today there is a lot of green under Harofeh Street. In the future, the Lincoln Hills neighborhood is supposed to be built there, but it doesn't seem like it will be in the near future, because at the current stage, no one is building the necessary super-infrastructure to make this possible.

Haifa people need patience

Undoubtedly, in order to be Haifai, the residents need a lot of patience, because the truth is that things in Haifa go slowly, to say the least. But those who have patience and manage to wait a decade or two, will be able to enjoy a new apartment in an attractive neighborhood.

Noam Street (Photo: Michal Yaron)

pleasantness

The meaning of the name of the street - Noam, is grace and pleasant ease. Rehov Noam has a similar meaning to several other streets in the neighborhood: Yifa and Zohar.

11th St. The Athletes (Michal Yaron)

11. The athletes

11th Street of the Sportsmen was named in memory of the 1972 sporians who were murdered at the Munich Olympics in 8. 9 terrorists took over the Israeli delegation and murdered two athletes. XNUMX other athletes were taken hostage. After negotiations, German police tried to take control of the kidnappers and failed and the nine athletes were murdered. Despite condemnations from all over the world, after the day off the Olympic Games resumed. Those who remained from the Israeli delegation returned to Israel and of course gave up the continuation of the games.

the path of light

Nativ Ha'or Kibal Street is the name given to an educational-community program operated by the Electric Company in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Local Government Center, and its purpose is to educate about proper behavior in an environment that consumes electricity. This street is the way to the electricity company building.

The Electricity Company building was also copied a few years ago, and is located close to the Kastra Mall. At the moment, despite its height, it does not hide the view from anyone. What will happen next? time will tell.

Sami Ofer Stadium

For decades, Haifa's municipal stadium was in the Kiryat Eliezer neighborhood. More than a decade ago, a decision was made to move the stadium to the new neighborhood, which was then being built on the southern slopes of Haifa.

The stadium was built at a cost of about NIS 800 million and has about 31,000 seats. Next to them there are several hundred parking lots. Those who come to see the football games park in the Haifa Mall, in Freud, near the cemetery in Neve David, in Kastra or along the road and walk to the stadium. Over the years, the municipality explained that this is how it is done all over the world. There are no parking lots near the big stadiums. According to football fans, the municipality takes advantage of the games to give fines to those who come to the game and camp in violation of the law.

Of the millions that it cost to build the stadium, the Ofer family donated about 40 million NIS and the stadium is called the Sami Ofer Stadium. Many residents of the city believe that this is apparently an injustice, both because of the relatively negligible portion that the Ofer family contributed, and also because the bulk of the Ofer family's fortune came From the polluting factories in the Gulf, which allegedly took the lives of Haifaim, who got cancer and died.

Next to the stadium there is a possibility to open shops and restaurants, but at the current stage most of the spaces are empty. There was also a thought that the stadium could be used to host huge concerts, but in the meantime there were very few concerts. What's more, sometimes seminars or large conferences are held there.

schools

In the Naot Peres neighborhood there is an elementary school, tens of millions of dollars were invested in its construction. The school is a growing school, it started with only first grade and slowly more and more layers were added. The school recently won the education award and a lot thanks to the principal who heads it. The school progresses from one peak day to another, there is always something to celebrate or celebrate. Emphasis is placed on learning several layers together and the work of several teachers in one class. All of these special projects require school teachers to work very hard, but they have the satisfaction of the students' enjoyment and cooperation. Those who still cooperate are the parents, who come to the school in order to give lessons in the areas in which they are strong and take an active part in the peak days.

Junior High

In the current academic year, a middle school was opened in the Ramat Hanasi neighborhood, which is located not far from Neot Peres. This middle school is also a growing school, so now the school only has 7th grade. Beyond that, because there is no six-year school nearby, the students in Naot Peres can choose the school regardless of registration areas.

How much does it cost?

According to the Madeleine website, a 5-room apartment (124 square meters) on Hamada Street was sold for NIS 2.3 million. In the Ashstrom project, a 4-room apartment (110 square meters) was sold for two million NIS. These prices make the Naot Peres neighborhood one of the most expensive neighborhoods in Haifa. The apartments in the neighborhood also sell quickly compared to other neighborhoods, where it takes time to get the asking price. Na'at Peres is also not on the ridge compared to the other expensive neighborhoods and despite this many Haifa residents are interested in living there. Among its advantages are the proximity to the sea, to MTM, to the exit to Tel Aviv, the fact that it is flat compared to our mostly mountainous city, and of course it is a new neighborhood. Many residents of the neighborhood also like the proximity to the Haifa Mall and Kastra.

  1. The advantage: far from the refineries and close to workplaces
Disadvantages: Go put up with Sami Ofer every other Saturday with Maccabi Haifa

  2. Hello Michal, nice article and quality explanations. I don't agree with some of what was said, but it is clear that the article is worthy and well thought out. Unfortunately, the future, for the rest of the neighborhood, looks very, very bad.

  3. Whoever buys in the neighborhood is making a bitter mistake. Every football game or other event in the stadium is one big nightmare for the residents of the neighborhood,

  4. Indeed, Navot Peres is proof that even in Haifa and not only in Tel Aviv it is possible to establish a successful neighborhood in terms of planning, proximity to the sea, shopping centers and transportation (train) and still feel part of a community.
Everyone who lives in the neighborhood feels the benefits.
As someone who came down from the Carmel to Naot Peres with great concerns, it is a very successful neighborhood both for the elderly population and for families with children who value a good education system and the school in Naot Peres is highly praised.
    Beautiful and detailed article.

  5. Anyone who wants to live in the neighborhood of the highways of Haifa, let him be blessed. who will also pay NIS 2 million for the view to Freud or the noise from the main road that crosses the neighborhood. In my opinion, it has no quality of life and the only demand is its proximity to the train and metro station. Perhaps it is to its credit, but the planning is extremely poor. It is a neighborhood of complexes as you mentioned. The apartment towers are expensive and have a sea view. Around them are apartment buildings with a view of the entrance to the parking lot, parking lot or Road. Where is the quality of life on the balcony facing the noisy entrance of dozens of vehicles to the parking lot, I don't understand.
Apartment prices have risen in all neighborhoods, even the worst. Naot Peres is not a bad neighborhood because it is new. And yet, when there is a nuisance like road closures at the stadium games and the noise from it, it seems we learned nothing from the Kiryat Eliezer case. Create a neighborhood that suffers from hazards. It was possible to separate the traffic systems for the stadium and the neighborhood. If they didn't do this, the tenants suffer, I already hear that from everyone who passed by. Without the stadium it was a great neighborhood. In my opinion, her planning is a complete failure and I am happy that even the director of engineering and the city engineer admitted this and that the second and third prizes will be planned differently in the future. Instead of a violently disconnected suburb on noisy roads, with desolate streets, they will try to integrate street-based commerce, active neighborhood streets and not isolated complexes around parking lots.
I hope the next Naot Peres will be more successful than the current failed planning. I also hope that they will be able to build Naot Peres B and C higher, to give as many sea view apartments as they did in Gali Carmel in the Carmel Castle, which is a neighborhood with better planning than the Naot Peres.

    • Naot Peres B and C are not on the planning table. The detailed master plans have already been approved. The plans guarantee the construction of high-rise buildings with a much greater density than the built Peres. The planning includes the elimination of the last streams coming down from the Carmel ridge - the elimination of the Amiram stream and the elimination of the Ovadia stream - the introduction of the streams into concrete pipes under the roads - until a strong flood will blow everything up. The planning canceled the city park that was supposed to be built in Naot Peres B. It is important to know the truth - the continuation of the neighborhood is expected to add over 6,000 apartments in the southern part and about 1,000 apartments in the eastern part - in huge buildings, some say monstrous - while creating a shortage of public spaces - they have learned nothing and know nothing.

  6. The municipality of Haifa has promised half of the Ofer family that the stadium will be called "Sami Ofer".
In order to publish the truth, an explanation must be added after each mention of the name of the donors, that the name was called because they contributed 5% of the costs.

  7. Michal, thank you very much for the information, I love your articles about Haifa so much, they bring back memories of a beloved city, streets that have already become childhood memories, a city that has been well engraved in me since my childhood and will never be forgotten
