"Reconstruction is not preservation" • The ambiguous fate of the building of the Faculty of Aeronautics at the Technion

The future of the building in the Faculty of Aeronautics at the Lot Technion is in the dark

The building of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Space Engineering at the Technion was designed by the architect Yohanan Ratner, who was a man of stature, one of the leaders of the "Haganah", a champion in the IDF and, among other things, served as a professor at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning at the Technion.

The unique building was erected in the early 50s, using construction technologies that were correct for those times. In recent years, it became clear that the building is subject to continuous subsidence due to ground movement and poor foundation.

Due to the recognition of the importance of the building and its historical and architectural value, it is necessary to examine very carefully the alternatives to save the building, the possibilities regarding the preservation of the building are being examined, so that on the one hand safety will not be compromised and on the other hand it will be possible to preserve its great cultural value.

An action that contradicts all conservative logic

It should be noted that the news that the possibility of the building being demolished and then rebuilt caused an uproar among many architects, as the building was declared to be preserved. The initial intention, it turned out, was to demolish the existing structure and build a structure underneath it that recreates the original structure, with a considerable expansion, but architects and conservation experts claimed that such an action contradicts all conservation logic and would lead to a devastating result. This position was also brought to the attention of the city engineer, the site preservation council and other relevant bodies.

A reflection of the development of Israeli architecture

The architect Valid Karkabi, former director of the Department of Building Conservation in the Haifa Municipality, said:
"It is indeed a well-known and special building. I would add that a few years ago, as part of preparing a new master plan for the Technion, the Technion was required to prepare a conservation survey and the services of certain architects were even hired for this purpose.

We must understand that the construction at the Technion is a kind of laboratory that reflects the development of Israeli architecture. The building of the Faculty of Aeronautics was declared a building for preservation. This is a unique building not only due to its historical value - being the first building on campus, but also having special architectural values. The decision to destroy and rebuild the building is very puzzling. After all, we all have long known, from practice, that restoration is not conservation," adds Karebi, "This is a treasure that belongs to the public as a whole, and a public protest must be launched to force all concerned to change the decision!"

The conservation obligation is not a 'recommendation'

It is important to note that recently it seems as if the list of preservation of buildings in the city is received here as if it is a kind recommendation and not as it should be treated: a sharp and clear statement that must be followed. When it is determined that a certain building is intended for preservation, there are significant professional considerations behind this determination, which have been considered and examined in depth by professionals who are experts in this. This is not an arbitrary or frivolous decision, on the contrary, buildings for preservation are those that have great value in various respects .

The Technion's response:

The building of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Space Engineering was built in the early 50s using outdated construction technologies. In recent years, it became clear that the building is subject to continuous subsidence due to ground movement and poor foundation. The shifting and cracks in the building have worsened in the past year, and after a comprehensive engineering inspection, it was determined that parts of the building are dangerous, and the Technion's vice president and CEO ordered one of its wings to be evacuated immediately and to prepare for the evacuation of the rest of the building when the time comes. Being the first building built on campus and recognizing its historical and architectural values, the Technion previously determined that the building Worthy of preservation Various alternatives are now being examined to preserve the values of the building and these will be discussed with preservation experts and the preservation factors in Haifa Municipality.

Haifa Municipality's response:

Preservation of buildings of historical and architectural value is a top value that the municipality stands by and adheres to. The structural problems in the aeronautics building were reported to the Haifa municipality only recently. Due to the importance of the issue, a tour of the place was arranged with the participation of the city engineer, the city architect and the people of the conservation department.
It goes without saying that no decisions have been made regarding the future of the building and the matter will be presented and discussed before the authority authorized to do so according to the municipal conservation committee law.

In the meantime, the municipality clarified to the Technion Institute that the issue of preservation is a value that must be significantly expressed in the new master plan submitted by the institution, and that as much as disputes remain, they will be brought to a decision in the discussion of the preservation committee before the plan is promoted.

  1. In my opinion, the building of the Faculty of Aeronautics at the Technion must be maintained and maintained as a top value, far ahead of many other buildings, the building is charming in its scenery and it was pleasant to study in the classrooms there in my first years of study at the Technion (yes, even though I studied in the Faculty of Architecture) and later, to hold meetings in it with the professors of aeronautics and mechanics During the planning and construction of the nearby Lydi Dois building that we connected it to by a bridge (and it was also damaged, neglected and abandoned).
The Technion must preserve its old and good properties, and complete restoration is not preservation, and restoration should not be called preservation, and I know this well from my experience.
Just as it would be unthinkable to destroy and restore the Technion building in Hadar Carmel, so it would be unthinkable to do this to the building of the Faculty of Aeronautics at the Technion, whose designer, Prof. Yochanan Ratner, also designed and built the building of the national institutions in Jerusalem and more, was an officer in the Czar's army in Russia, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technion, General of the Army and Chief of Staff when Yaakov Dori fell ill, and this building is one of the icons he left us.

  2. You know the father who tells his son "Enough with the phone!", then hears a tweet from his phone and he forgets everything for the next hour?
The Technion, the Faculty of Architecture, talks a lot about architectural heritage, respect for the profession, there are even conservation studies. But when it comes to money, to the 'real world', you forget it.
How is it that there is no general strike of the faculty, where I studied a long time ago? During my studies there was a general strike. The subject: the way of learning. Absolutely nothing to do with money!
Shame on the institution and shame on the municipality.
The building will not be destroyed!

  3. The Technion (where I studied architecture) educated us, among other things, on the importance of cultural values
It cannot be that today we give up a unique cultural value created at the Technion
Today there are rich technological capabilities that will certainly allow the strengthening of the structure and its preservation
It is forbidden to borrow on the building!!!!!!
    Prof. Edr. David Guggenheim

  4. I studied there in the 1980s, a very beautiful building, as an engineer I will say one thing, destroy it and rebuild it exactly, this is the right education for aeronautical engineers, and better than patchwork.

  5. Very instructive article! The Technion's conduct regarding the construction on the campus is like a "state within a state". Decisive enforcement of the conservation laws by the Haifa municipality is needed so that cultural assets such as the aeronautics building are not lost to all of us.

  6. The Technion is eliminating its own history. It shouldn't be surprising. All the motives today are money, luxury, money, luxury, money, luxury

  7. If you destroy, you can rebuild - with a 50% reduction.
This way the building will take up less space and the remaining space that will be freed up will be able to build offices for all the lecturers in the faculty.
The scaled-down building could be called instead of "Binin Aeronautica" simply "Binin Air"... in the language of "Loft-Gashetpan".
