City Center • The Dick Family's All-In-One Incarnation

The City Center building is located in the northern part of the German colony, at the intersection of Ben Gurion Boulevard and Jaffa Streets and its address is 6 Ben Gurion Boulevard. Dick's Department Store According to the 1882 map of the German colony, on the lot on which the City Center building was built, the large trading house of the Templar family Abram Duck was located. The Dick family was one of the wealthiest in the German colony and their residence - at 8 Ben Gurion Boulevard - was one of the largest and most luxurious in the colony. Later, their sons, who continued the family tradition, were among the largest merchants in Haifa. The family ran a kind of department store that sold a variety of products, from everyday products to agricultural machinery. Among its regular customers were also Jewish settlers from the northern colonies. Agronomist Aaron Aaronson from Zichron Yaakov worked for a time as an agent at Dick's trading house, before devoting himself to his scientific and political work. In a 1984 photograph of...

The six-year schools: just before registration opens, what options do the students in Haifa have?

In about a month, the registration for the six two-year schools will open, and each parent will have to choose, according to the registration areas and regional superclasses, which of the schools to register their children to. What are the alternatives facing the residents of Haifa when it comes to middle schools and high schools?

It is important to emphasize that choosing a six-year school for a boy or girl often raises difficult dilemmas: where will the child be better off socially, which school will suit him/her in the best way academically, along with the question of ease of access and proximity to home, and more. Even in the schools that are considered very good, children can have very negative experiences, encountering other children who will treat them badly or teachers they will not get along with and even worse. On the other hand, even in an apparently less regarded school, a child can have an excellent experience, leave with a full and good maturity and with a sense of competence and self-worth and quality social connections. After all this has been said, we will examine the offer of schools in Haifa.

The Alliance School (Photo: Live here in the field)

Alliance - "All Israel Friends"

The school is located in Emek HaShem (at the end of the upper part of Dubnov Street), below the Dania intersection. Students come to the school from Neve Shanan, Ramot Ramez, Ramot Sapir, Ramat Almogi, Ramat Golda, the new Rumma and Dania. The school is run by Michal Gal, the middle school is run by Ruth Gal (no family connection) and the high school is run by Vared Azari.

The school is attended by a socioeconomically strong population. The percentage of eligibility for matriculation at the school is high and many parents and students are satisfied with it. At the same time, with the end of middle school, sometimes even during middle school, there is a spillover of students from Alliance to private schools.

In the middle school, there are different tracks that are divided into classes, such as a math class (leadership, ICT, communication), a computer class, an excellence class (which focuses on scientific subjects), also a special education class (emotional problems) and more.

The educational team definitely invests in the students, which is reflected in proper pedagogical success, and the vast majority of the students and parents we spoke with, reported as mentioned, about satisfaction with the school.

Urban A

Last week the school, which is located in Kiryat Eliezer, won the education prize. The principal of the school, Yiffit Cohen, explained that the school staff is available to the students at all times, 24/7, and the multiple investment in each student is a candle to their feet all along the way. Not infrequently, she said, the teachers stay late at school for the students, if This is to maintain educational reinforcements and if to help in other areas, indeed, the beautiful results in the field prove it.

In recent years, the school has been cooperating with the Rambam Medical Center, which is located next to it. Students can study, in addition to all the regular subjects, also subjects related to medicine.

It should be noted that in terms of the cultivation index, Kiryat Eliezer and Bat Galim are not high in the city, and this fact emphasizes even more the good work that the administration and teachers do with the students. The school also accepts quite a few new immigrants, some of whom have only recently arrived in Israel and do not speak Hebrew, and there is a very large investment in their absorption and integration from an educational and social point of view.

Urban C

City School C is located in the Neve Shanan neighborhood. In the past, students who lived in the neighborhood were automatically assigned to the school, but today the municipality has opened the registration areas, and students from Neve Shanan can choose between Urban C and Alliance.

The school was run for 28 years by Yehoshua ben Itamar. He retired and in his place came the manager Lilach Shani Romano. The school reached a very impressive percentage of eligibility for matriculation, and there is great satisfaction on the part of the students and parents with the pedagogical and social activities there.

There were years when the strong population in Neve Sha'anan preferred the Alliance school, while students from the slopes of Neve Sha'anan mostly studied in Bironi C. Today, as mentioned, the situation has changed and a large percentage of the students in Neve Shaanan come to study in Ironi C and you can see very good successes of the school, from academic achievements to the recruitment rate for the IDF.

The school is located on Bichurim Street in the center of Carmel and is attended by students from Azoza and Carmel. In recent years, students from elementary schools in Neve David and the Carmeli Division can choose which six-year school they wish to enroll in, and some of them end up at Aroni H'ah.

The management and teachers at the school invest great efforts in ensuring that every student exhausts his academic abilities and leaves the school with a matriculation certificate, as well as in a variety of social programs, the aim of which is to make every student feel good at school.

classes

The classes school moved from the center of Carmel to Hadar Elion to Leon Blum Street to a new building, which was built so that the David Yelin Elementary School could move to the school's former home. Tens of millions of shekels were invested in the new school and this is reflected in the new buildings, yards and equipment inside the school.

Students come to the school from the neighborhoods of Carmelia, Kabvir and Hadar Alyon. In the beginning after the transition between the schools there were some squeaks. Parents claimed that in the previous structure of classes students could walk and to the new school they must have a shuttle. The parents claimed that there are not enough shuttles and there is a great crowding in the buses that do arrive to take the children to school. There was also no agreement regarding the name of the school. Initially, it was decided that the school would be named after the former director of the district in the Ministry of Education, the late Rachel Momoki. The decision caused outrage among some of the school's graduates, who believed that the school should be dedicated to the memory of the founders of the school and not Momoki. In the end, a compromise was found and now All are immortalized, each in a different building of the school.

In the new S.M.A.T

For decades the school at the SMT was on Masada Bahadar Street. A few years ago it moved to Neve David and changed its name to the new SMT. The school conducts entrance exams and selects the students who excel in the real subjects. The school is managed by Avi Ziegler, who strongly believes in innovation and collaborations with high-tech companies and the Technion so that the students receive more than a high school diploma upon graduation. In the school there are no bells at all, and there are no problems of violence or discipline.

Today the school is in a temporary structure, which does not allow it to expand. The permanent building is supposed to be built next to the building where the school is located, but the construction has not yet started.

The school managed to achieve a very high percentage of eligibility in the previous school year thanks to a large investment by the management and teachers. The school is regional, so those who pass the entrance exam can study there, regardless of their area of residence in Haifa.

The Reut School is an arts school in Kiryat Eliezer. At the end of the division, some of the students go on to the Wicho school and some of the students integrate into regular schools. In order to be admitted to the Reut school, you have to pass tests and since there is a great demand and few places, it is not easy to get accepted. Some of the students get the help of paid teachers and instructors in order to pass the tests.

Undoubtedly, Reot School receives great satisfaction from parents and students. There are majors in photography, theater, dance, painting and more, in addition to the regular studies, so the students study until late hours. Since Ha'ot is a regional school, the students come to it from all neighborhoods of the city, so they often have a long journey to school and back to their home, but there is still satisfaction with the level of learning and the social connections that are formed in the classrooms.

Filtering into the school creates a situation where there are very few discipline problems. Students who, at the end of the three years in Reut, go on to a private or public school, often integrate easily.

the open (barry)

The open school offers transition to elementary school, also middle school. When students finish ninth grade, they can transfer to a private or public high school. In recent years, there have been some riots around the school, when at first there was a fight between the parents and the closing of the school, when they were not satisfied with the principal. Today, when the principal has been replaced and the parents are satisfied with her, there are parents who claim that the school is no longer run according to the principles upon which it was founded. This claim is mainly heard from the old parents, who remember the old days, when both the management and the teachers would settle conflicts in the classrooms and manage the studies according to "open" and "democratic" principles, unlike the way normal schools are run. According to these parents, the behavior in many of the school's classrooms is very similar to that of a normal school, and they regret it.

It should be noted that, although the studies are conducted in a different way than the other schools and the students have more freedom of choice, they fit in nicely afterwards, when they get to the "regular" high schools.

the real

The real school is considered a recognized unofficial school. Parents are required to pay a tuition fee each year that varies from year to year. The studies in high school are relatively cheap compared to those in middle school and high school.

The middle school in Reali has 3 branches: Hadar, Metos in the center of Carmel and Azoza. In high school all the students go to study in Reali Beit Biram, which is located on Abba Khushi Boulevard in Azoza. It is not possible to compare the buildings of the Reali school and the buildings of the public schools (perhaps except for the classes, which is a school New and very invested). Parents who believe in private schools in general and in Reali in particular, claim that the school has almost no discipline problems and the students are learning-oriented. They also point to an extremely high percentage of eligibility for matriculation, with half of the students doing 5 credits of math.

There is no doubt that the level of teaching at the school, the equipment, the classroom spaces and the computers are at a very high level, and yes, most of the students come from families of a high socioeconomic level. Alongside the investment in studies, the school holds many events and extensive activities beyond the pedagogical side. Does it justify the significant financial investment? Each family probably has to do their own calculations.

It should be noted that it is not easy to be admitted to the school, to say the least, since many parents want to enroll their children in Reali and there is not enough room for everyone, and the admission conditions accordingly. Some parents, in order to increase their child's chances of being admitted to school, send him as a toddler to "Realigan", but it is not so easy to get accepted to the Reali Kindergartens either.

Leo Buck

The school is located in the Carmel French neighborhood and operates as a regional school for students from Carmel French and Shaprintsk, and besides, there are also students in the school who come from all over the city and pay the same amount. In the middle school there is a combination of students who come from all over the city and pay for their studies, and among students who live nearby and belong to the school.

The Leo Buck School benefits from donations and a large budget, and it shows. The high school building and the library, for example, are highly invested, and the percentage of eligibility for matriculation approaches 100%. The school also offers a very large variety of extracurricular activities. Students are exposed to politicians from all ends of the political spectrum and inspiring people in various fields.

While the public schools in Haifa have a 0% dropout rate and any student who finishes middle school can start high school, in Leo Buck there is screening and those who have negative grades cannot continue to high school. As in many private schools, also in Leo Buck the parents are very significant and involved in the way the school is run.

the nuns

The nuns' school reveals quite a bit about the level of education in the city's Arab schools. The school has excellent achievements in matriculation and very high satisfaction on the part of the parents, with other parents complaining that the gap between it and other schools in the city intended for the Arab population has become huge. According to them, the public schools for the Arab population are at an insufficient level and do not constitute a worthy alternative.

On the other hand, the municipality has been investing quite a bit in recent years in an attempt to offer suitable alternatives and change the situation. Until this step is completed, the nunnery stands out in quality considerably above the others.

El Hior

The school is located in Wadi Nisnas, and contains classes from 1st to 8th. With two classes in each layer. In recent years, the parents of the students claim that the school is extremely overcrowded and requires a massive renovation in order for the students to be able to study there in a reasonable and acceptable manner. The parents started a fight and even threatened to shut down the school if things were not handled to their satisfaction. When the request was also made by them that the school building be expanded to a nearby building, but after discussions with the municipality on the matter, it became clear that the building in question is a building for preservation and it is not clear at the moment if this plan is even applicable. For now and for a long time, nothing comes of them, and they even claim that over the years some cosmetic repairs have been made to the school, but they do not provide a real solution to the problems.

The six-year school Kiryat Haim High School

The school consists of two middle schools and one high school. Students from West and East Kiryat Haim come to him. Kiryat Haim is a relatively large area and the number of students in the school accordingly. The school building is very large and has a grove with tables and benches for the well-being of the students.

The school has management and teachers who are very committed and see the results in the field. The percentage of recruitment from among the graduates of the school is very high and no student is given up on full matriculation at the end of the twelfth grade.

Klish canceled the regional superclasses in the high schools, fatally harming the competition for prestige and uniqueness between them.
Today it is possible to register only at the high school in the registration area and the only choice left is Besmat, Reut or a private high school - Reali.
Lubeck is also impossible if the child is not gifted.
And the schools have no interest in making an effort and presenting unique and high level study programs in order to attract good students, there is no mixing and acquaintance between children from different neighborhoods in the city, and of course, there are no Druze students.
