There are many neighborhoods in Haifa. In some of them I would be happy to live and in some less. I wouldn't choose to live in Sabioni Dania, which turns out to be perfectly fine, because even if I wanted to live there, I wouldn't be able to afford it...
More and more buildings
The reason I don't like this neighborhood is that it's all high-rises, which is something I don't like, to put it mildly. I imagine that the inside of the apartments are very beautiful, designed and invested, and yet, when driving around the neighborhood or sitting in the neighborhood cafe, everything is gray around. Another building and another building, and so expensive. If I were to spend NIS 3 million on an apartment (and there are certainly apartments that are much more expensive) I would personally choose a different neighborhood. Well, to each their own, and of course there are quite a few who disagree with me. For me, a balcony on a high floor is not an attraction either, although I'm sure some of the balconies Sabioni Dania has a beautiful view. The thing that really excites me about these towers is the fact that they have a gym on the entrance floor.
The wrong building
I think my second biggest mistake as a journalist was following a building in the Savioni Dania neighborhood. Many years ago I sent a photographer to photograph the building on Mendel Singer Street, which was under construction. I gave him the address, he put it in Wise and took a picture of the building to which Wise led him. Only this building was not the right building... and I got stuck with pictures of another building and not the one I wrote about...
My first biggest mistake as a journalist is not related to Sabioni Dania, but that's for another article... What's more, these mistakes taught me important lessons, both as a person and as a journalist and I learned to be careful and check carefully the things I write about.
The commercial center
The main street in the neighborhood, through which you enter it, is Oskar Schindler. Many people know Schindler's story, not least thanks to Steven Spielberg's Hollywood film, in which quite a few Israeli actors also participated. Schindler was a German industrialist, a devotee of the nations of the world, who during World War II saved about 1,200 Jews from death by employing them in his factories in Poland and Czechoslovakia. On Schindler Street is the commercial center of the neighborhood and it has a cafe "Arcafe", a general health fund, a supermarket and another restaurant - Azumami and the ice cream that is considered one of the best in the city and in general - "Aislon". The cafe is very successful, people sit and enjoy the cafe, spend time with friends and also buy the pastries and cakes that are baked on the premises.
Michael Kashtan Street
Michael Kashtan was an educator, writer, translator and poet. He studied literature at the Hebrew University and was a teacher and educator in Hadassim and later at the Reali School and the Oranim Seminary. Kashtan was also one of the founders of Beit Rothschild and a partner in its management.
Mendel Singer Street
Mandel Singer has some similarities to the poet Rachel: both were born in 1890, although he outlived her. Both of them immigrated twice to the Land of Israel. Mendel Singer, who was a writer, journalist and political activist, left the country after two years, when he fell ill with a fever. He immigrated to Israel for the second time, and this time he did not leave it. He lived in Haifa, wrote over 10 books and was a journalist in the "Davar" newspaper.
In my eyes, the story of the building on Mendel Singer Street is the story of Haifa as a whole. The contractor got permission to build a building, and when he finished building the number of approved floors, he just kept building. People around saw that the construction was continuing and contacted the municipality to update them on what was happening. The municipality contacted the contractor and ordered him to stop building, but he did not stop.
The face of the building is the face of the city
In the end the building was finished and the contractor sold all the apartments, legal and illegal. Then there was a trial and the contractor had to pay his debt to the company, but he taught us all an important lesson: a contractor who is apparently not afraid to break the law, can profit from it financially. Not only that, this case shows the helplessness of the municipality and the city as a whole. A contractor decides to build a few more floors, because that's what he wants without any permission, there is no one to stop him.
The Haifa people stay at home
I believe that those who do not come out and protest what is happening to them, have no right to complain. 290,000 residents live in Haifa, many of them like to grumble about many things that they don't see, but at the moment of truth, when they have to go out, demonstrate and shout "Enough. We won't accept this!" Precisely then, they will remain tied up at home, in comfort and habit. Unfortunately, this is what our city looks like.
I think that the State of Israel understands the inability of the Haifa people to set boundaries and say what they will not be willing to accept, and therefore, to a certain extent, our city has become the state's garbage can. It starts with a contractor like the one of the building on Mandel Singer Street that no one counted and succeeded, and continues with many other things, which are no less painful.
Rehov Haim Hazez
Haim Hazez was a Hebrew playwright and writer, a man of spirit and thought, one of the most prominent of his generation, to the extent that he was considered a cultural leader. Hazaz was the first winner of the Israel Prize for Literature. He was orphaned by his mother at the age of 6 and grew up with his grandmother. In 1919, during the riots of the civil war in Ukraine, his family was murdered. His difficult childhood and the difficult struggles from a young age greatly influenced his writing.
The training of the Yishuv
Kashret Hashav is the oldest real estate company in Israel and is one of the leading companies in Israel in the field of yielding properties. Kashret Hashav focuses on the real estate sector, mainly in the area of shopping malls, logistics parks and urban renewal. The Settlement Settlement was founded in England in 1909 by the Zionist Organization, as an instrument for the purchase and development of real estate in the Land of Israel. In October 1987, control of the company was acquired by the Nimrodi family, which continues to be the controlling owner of the company even today.
Eliyahu Orbach Street
Eliyahu Orbach was the first "full" Jewish doctor in Haifa. He founded the first Jewish hospital in the city and was one of the pioneers of modern medicine in the Land of Israel. Orval was also a historian and biblical scholar and a Haifa public activist in many fields. As a token of appreciation he received honorary citizenship of the city in 1960.
Playgrounds
If I had to write just one article over and over again, it would undoubtedly be an article about the playgrounds of Meta and Maale. There are exceptions, but in general there are gaps between the playgrounds in the disadvantaged neighborhoods and the more established neighborhoods. There is also a difference in gene maintenance. What's worse is that in general it can be assumed that there are more mothers without a private car in the disadvantaged neighborhoods, that all they have to offer their children are the playgrounds that are within walking distance of the house. On the other hand, a mother with a car can take the children in the afternoon to any playground in the city, to playgrounds, to the sea, to the kindergarten and more.
Life is a wheel
There is no doubt that a child who grew up on Electric Street, for example, can certainly be very successful as an adult, but there will probably be many difficulties and obstacles that he will have to overcome along the way, compared to a child who grew up on the Carmel and not only because of the playground. Every society is measured by its weakest link, and it is our duty as a society to take care of all layers of the population, certainly the weaker ones. Life is a wheel, and even if today we are healthy and grounded, tomorrow we may be the ones who need help from someone else.
Jacob Orland Street
Jacob Orland was an Israeli poet, translator, playwright and editor, recipient of the Israel Prize for Hebrew Singer and the Bialik Prize for Fine Literature. Among his hymns were nights and the pomegranate tree.
How much does it cost?
According to the Madeleine website, a 5-room apartment on Mendel Singer Street (110 square meters) was sold for 1.77 million NIS. A 7-room apartment (174 square meters) was sold on Oskar Schindler Street for NIS 3.3 million. On top of this price you also have to add a considerable property tax and a house committee, which sometimes also includes the maintenance of a gym on the entrance floor of the building. In short, it is not cheap to be a resident of Savoni Dania, but apparently living in the neighborhood is worth the price for the residents.
A delusional article that introduces the feelings of the reporter, even though it is an informational article about the names of the streets. Says about how expensive it is, and that it is 3 million per apartment. But in the end it turns out that it is for 7 rooms on the main street (probably in the Trio towers). A total of 5 rooms for 1.77 million is not that expensive.
And it's really not gray, there are wadis there and lots of green, and also next to the Carmel forests which are full of green.
The story of a neighborhood...you can turn this into a series of nice articles about neighborhoods in Haifa and the stories hidden in their streets and buildings, which are not always known to the reading public.
You forgot Yelidi Tehran Street. There was a place to mention the origin of this street name
The children of Tehran are a group of children from Poland who came to Iran by the wrong way, some of them orphans. In 1943 they were allowed to come to the Land of Israel... after the temporary occupation of Poland by the Russians at the beginning of the war and within the framework of an agreement between the Germans and the Russians (Ribbentrop-Molotov Agreement). The Jewish children and some of the families moved with the army of the Polish General Anders and arrived from the USSR together with the army This one is up to Iran. Their difficult physical condition caused the Jewish Agency of Iran to set up a special camp for them and thus they were saved from severe starvation. Among the famous children of Tehran are the former champions Haim Erez and Yanush Ben Gal as well as the TV personality Alex Giladi.
