Streets and names • How did the streets in the Ramat Golda neighborhood in Haifa get their names?

A beautiful neighborhood named after a strong woman

Ramat Golda was named in memory of Prime Minister Golda Meir. It is unfortunate that those who already remember Golda Meir, remember her in many cases because of the failure in the Yom Kippur War, and much less her long years as a brave and passionate Zionist activist since before the establishment of the state and then as a politician in the Israeli government. She was truly a strong, extraordinary and impressive woman, especially in such a male and military world.

today also

To this day, if you look at who runs the country, both nationally and locally, you will find a great many military personnel of one rank or another, men in the absolute majority. Still, even in 2022, there are too few women in key positions.

First and only

The world is changing, no doubt, but there is still a long way to go. Many women are still so busy in their 30s with raising children, cleaning and cooking, that when they raise their heads for the first time at the age of 40 and try to realize themselves professionally, they find that all the equal positions are already taken. Of course, every rule has an exception, but there are a lot of talented women who don't realize themselves, and a lot of very mediocre men who make the most of their potential. So if this is our world today, imagine how brave and subversive Golda Meir's activity was in those days, and just to emphasize: Golda Meir is not only the woman The first who served as prime minister in Israel, She is the only one To this day.

Three entrances

You can enter the Ramat Golda neighborhood from three entrances. On the one hand, it is on the Dania intersection. On the other hand, you can enter it through the traffic circle that connects it to the estate. There is also an entrance from the main road to the neighborhood, in its center.

Emma Lazarus Street

Emma Lazarus was an American Jewish poet, who inspired many Jewish women of her time. His most famous poem is the sonnet "The New Colossus" (1883), engraved on the Statue of Liberty in New York. All the signs with the names of the streets in the neighborhood are in excellent condition, only Emma's sign looks bad. As if it rained only on this sign, while it was spring on the other signs...

Rachel Kagan Street

Rachel Kagan was a member of the Knesset and chairman of Wizo Israel. Kagan is one of the only two women to sign the Declaration of Independence, along with Golda Meir.

Dr. Erich Lev Square

In October of last year, a square was inaugurated at the intersection of the Golda-Koifman streets named after the beloved of the city of Haifa, Dr. Erich Lev. Lev served as deputy mayor, a leader of the freedom movement in the city, a judge of the labor court and an activist in the organization 'Ilan'. Lev is a bit unusual in Ramat Golda, because the other streets were named after people who have no direct connection to Haifa.

Golda's landscape

The view from the Ramat Golda neighborhood is probably one of the highlights that Haifa has to offer. On the one hand, it is the view of the seashore and not of the bay, which means that the air is relatively less polluted. On the other hand, as of now, nothing prevents the residents of the neighborhood from seeing the wadi followed by the sea.

There is still some green left

There is a plan from the time of the British mandate to build a new neighborhood on the slopes of Ramat Golda. From time to time it and the objections to it are discussed in the municipal planning institutions, but as of now, there is no construction in the area. There are naturally very few green lungs left in Haifa, especially since the construction of 'Givat Zemar', and the thought that the Golda slopes will also become a row of buildings is a little depressing. At the same time, we live in the city and the city builds and develops new neighborhoods.

Tahon Street

Rabbi Dr. Abraham Yehoshua Tahun was a businessman, writer, thinker, publicist and Zionist leader in Poland.

Bank Branch

Banks are not non-profits (institutions without profit intentions), and therefore in the last decade we can see the closing of many bank branches. This is reaching a situation where in some neighborhoods there are no bank branches at all. The main victims are of course the older population, who like to receive service from a banker at the branch closest to their home. The International Bank actually keeps its branches open, it has branches even in relatively small neighborhoods, where no other bank has branches. There is such a branch in the Golda neighborhood and in the new Romma.

Pinchas Rosen Street

Pinchas Rosen was the founder of the New Aliyah Party and one of the founders of the Liberal Party, one of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence. He was a member of the Knesset, a member of the Tel Aviv City Council and the first Minister of Justice of the State of Israel. He held the position of Minister of Justice from the first Knesset to the ninth (except for the third).

Yehezkel Koipman Street

Prof. Yehezkel Koipman was one of the leading biblical scholars and an Israeli thinker and laureate of the Israel Prize in Jewish Studies. He was from Jerusalem and headed the biblical department at the Hebrew University.

Few apartments in each building

What is beautiful about the apartments on Koipman Street and Ramat Golda as a whole, is that in each building there are very few apartments and very few neighbors. If you check buildings in other neighborhoods, which sometimes have dozens of families, you can see buildings with good neighborly relations alongside very difficult neighbor conflicts. Quite often it happens that the parties turn to ask for relief in court or file a complaint with the police. The difficulty is that even if you check your neighbors (if that's even possible), before you buy an apartment, the next day the neighbors can change. Undoubtedly, when there are 3-4 units in the building, there is less risk of conflict with the neighbors. What further improves the situation is that there are no elevators in Golda, so the common space for the neighbors usually has a common garden.

schools

Students from the Golda neighborhood study at the Einstein Elementary School and then at the six-year Alliance School, which is located near the neighborhood. In practice, many children from the neighborhood study elementary school at the Reali school and then in middle school and high school they also go to the School of Bad Arts and Leo Buck.

How much does it cost?

According to the Madeleine website, a 3-room apartment (73 square meters) was sold on Tahon Street for 1.34 million NIS. A 5-room apartment (103 square meters) was sold on Koipman Street for a price of 1.77 million. In general, Ramat Golda is a beautiful neighborhood with low buildings and spacious apartments. Each building has a small number of apartments and there are no apartments because the neighborhood was built after the 80s.

  1. Dear Michal,
What about the streets named after the women Hana Rubina the actress and Anda Amir the poet?
Did you run out of gas or just tired...?

  2. "But there are a lot of talented women who don't realize themselves, and a lot of very mediocre men who make the most of their ability."
Your hatred of men is evident in the blasphemy you pour out.
There are also many mediocre and failed women, who look for excuses and are probably jealous of talented men who succeed...
Men in Israel serve more in the army.
serving in the reserves. More are killed for the defense of the country (much more).
So that the unqualified will write that they deserve and deserve and against military personnel as leaders.
Yes, I would love to hear what the relationship is between women and men who fell in defense of the country.
    How much audacity you have.

  3. Excellent article, it is especially important to mention the names of the women on the streets.
