The memorial ceremony for the 69 victims of the submarine Ahi 'Dakar' on the 54th anniversary of its disappearance, took place Today (Sun. 2/1/22) At the commemorative monument on Mount Herzl.
The ceremony was held under the chairmanship of the Deputy Chief of the General Staff, Major General Herzi Halevi and with the participation of the Commander of the Naval Arm, Major David Sa'ar Selma, the bereaved families as well as officers and soldiers of the Naval Arm.
The disappearance of the Dakar submarine
On January 9, 1968, the submarine Akhi 'Dakar' left Britain for the port of Haifa. About five days before its scheduled arrival date in Israel, its traces disappeared and 69 of its fighters were recognized as IDF soldiers. In 1999, after many years of searching, the submarine was located in the depths of the sea, on its original sailing route. The bridge of the submarine was brought to Israel and is now in the Navy Museum in Haifa.
From the words of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Major General Herzi Halevi:
"The hard news in that stormy winter of 1968, about the fate of the submarine Ahi 'Dakar', hit Israeli society and left it shocked. National news is hard to bear for the waiting families - 54 years have passed, many who then waited for the sign of life are no longer with us. Courage is the willingness to place yourself in situations of risk. The sixty-nine fallen - all of them were heroes by virtue of their willingness to choose this action, they deserved every appreciation for their service, for setting out on a mission to strengthen the power of the State of Israel by bringing in another submarine and above all for their willingness to fight the enemy when necessary. The legacy of the fallen is what strengthens the soldiers and commanders today, to continue to do and excel, to want to protect the State of Israel, to take many risks in this name, while giving up other things that the servants could do. Those whose memory we salute here, the fighters of the submarine Achi 'Dakar', were the best of the construction of the State of Israel.
Even today we have the privilege of having in our ranks, in the ranks of the Arm of the Sea, the best thinkers in the tasks - defense of the State of Israel. Memory is like the sea, infinite, never ending. We are with you, dear families, in this difficult voyage, we will not be able to calm the winds and lower the waves, but if we can be an anchor, a string or a sail, to make it a little easier for you, we will always be there by your side.'
From the words of the Commander of the Sea Arm, Major General David Sa'ar Selma:
"The martyrs of the dagger are the ones who remind us of who we are and what is the purpose of our actions here. They give meaning to sublime values - love of the homeland, giving, dedication, unity of destiny and the meaning of a path. Like all the people of the submarine fleet, like the entire arm of the sea - the warriors understand very well that our ranks The missing ones are the imperative to continue. The flotilla's missions were and remain unknown, its people are shadowy people, their ways of operating make it possible to be in the most critical areas of operation for the naval arm and the IDF as a whole."
may them rest in peace. good week
Sad and painful, it's hard to imagine the moments he spent in the spaces. It's hard to think about the days and nights for all the years that have passed and the families are going through.
The rituals are important and must be observed.
May your memory be blessed.
