Thousands will run this evening in the port of Haifa. One of the runners will be Ikki Elner (58), who about 5 years ago was informed that he had terminal cancer in his body. Today, 5 years later, and after a difficult and complex struggle with the serious illness, he is preparing to complete 5 km in the Haifa night race.
5 years after Ikki Elner (58) was diagnosed with terminal (lung) cancer, and after the doctors predicted that the disease would defeat him within a few months, today Elner will fulfill a dream and try to cross the finish line - along with many friends who will run with him and cheer him on - in the Haifa night race, in the five kilometer section.
After a hard fight with the aggressive cancer, and after he managed to stop the spread of the tumors, about three years ago Elner's ability to walk began to fade. Within a few months he became paralyzed in his legs and had to move around in a wheelchair. Doctors from around the world rallied to save his legs and with revolutionary treatment he returned to walking about two years ago and is still left with partial paralysis.
After he began to restore his body and health through sports, at the "Crossfit Haifa" fitness club, Elner began to dream of the day when he could run again.
At the end of grueling training, and together with his friends at Crossfit Haifa, Elner will stand at the starting line this evening, aiming to complete a 5 km run. Together with the group that will accompany him, when everyone is dressed in shirts with the inscription printed on them "cancer free" These amazing friends will dedicate the run to encouraging the recovery of cancer patients who are dealing with the serious disease.
