I have already written about neighborhoods I lived in, this time I will write about a neighborhood that, if I could reach it, I would happily live in. There are many beautiful neighborhoods in Haifa, many neighborhoods have potential, there are those that benefit from incredible proximity to the seashore, but there is no other neighborhood in my opinion like the Shambor neighborhood. Sderot Handiv, Hayarkon Street and Nativ Ofakim are, in my eyes, the three most attractive streets in the city, and the price of the apartments in them accordingly.
Is there a neighborhood here?
Shambor neighborhood, which is named after the family from which the land was bought, is not easily identified, that is, a resident of Haifa, certainly someone who comes here from the outside, will not always be able to understand that there is a neighborhood here at all. For years I was sure that all the streets of Shambor were part of a mansion neighborhood. But there is no similarity between the streets of the Achuza neighborhood, Vitkin, Gat, Harofeh, Michal, etc., and the streets of the Shambor neighborhood.
Kidron Street
The name Kidron originates from the ancient settlement "Kedron" in the book of Hashmonaim 1948, and is identified with the biblical settlement "Gedera" (today's Tel Katara). There is a settlement in Israel with this name that was established in XNUMX near an Arab village, which was there - "Katra".
Meshol Yehudit and Meir
Judith and Meir Bar Rav Hai David, received a slightly more luxurious meal from Bar Rav Hai David in Sheprintsk. The plaque shows that they were among the liberators of Haifa in '48 and worked to promote uniqueness in education. While Yehudit was the president of the Yad Ezer organization for the sick and the model woman of Haifa, Meir was a member of the city council and its management.
Nativ Ofakim Street
The street comes off Margalit Street. I think there is no street like it in Haifa. The houses are mostly private, many of them were built in the last 20 years instead of the old houses that were there before. In all the houses, on the left side there is a breathtaking view towards the sea, with nothing separating the balconies and gardens from it. The meaning of the name "Nativ Ofakim" is the place where the sky and the sea merge.
Zerubbabel Street
There is also Zerubbabel Street and stairs. The street is a circular street, which starts in front of Bonan HMO and ends almost in the Carmelia neighborhood. When I was a student I cleaned two apartments on the street. One of the best jobs I've had, no one comes to you with complaints and all you have to do is sweep and wash. One apartment belonged to a sweet elderly couple, who always had a cake waiting for me when I came on Wednesday that the woman had baked.
Biblical hero
There are no schools in Haifa named after biblical heroes, except for the Ehud school. 5 years ago a decision was made to change the name of the school and call it the "Community School for Communication named after the late Shlomo Tel". Getting a school in Haifa is a serious honor. Someone who was a little more serious educator than Tel, the former district director in the Ministry of Education and the holder of the education portfolio in the municipality, the late Rachel Momoki, accepted the six-year school, but some eyebrows were raised when the name of the school changed from one day to the next. There is a simple explanation for this move, But he demands so much "seemingly", that it is better to give up. Seemingly.
The school is managed by Rama Sigal Azoulai, who previously managed the Romema Music School. The day we learned at my house that Siegel was moving to run a school in Kiryat Haim instead of Romema, was one of the blackest days we've known. One of my daughters thought that the only solution would be to move to Kiryat Haim. In the end we calmed down, but we will always have a warm corner of our hearts for Sigal.
Sderot Handiv
The boulevard in memory of Edmond James de Rothschild, nicknamed the well-known benefactor. The street received its name in 1942. At the end of the street is Beit Yad Labanim, which has a memorial site for those who fell in Israel's wars and hostilities, and a city library. On the street lived Avraham and Jeanette Dankner, the parents of Danny Dankner, who gained the trust of the controlling owner of Bank Hapoalim Sherri Arison, until it became clear that the trust was excessive and he ended his job and went to prison, allegedly. Another tenant on the street was Liora Ofer, Yuli Ofer's daughter.
Yarakon Street
As the name of Tel Aviv's Nahal Yarkon. Nahal Yarakon is of course also mentioned in the Bible. The street has been undergoing a face lift in the last 15 years and building after building are being renovated. The neighbors are very opposed, each TMA brings more vehicles to the street and burdens the infrastructure. Of course, it is more difficult to resist when the TMA comes to their building and their old housing unit becomes a new apartment in a new building, which is worth millions. Each TMA raises objections from different directions, sometimes the district committee and the sub-committee for planning and construction make changes, but little by little the whole street becomes a street of new and prestigious buildings with a view of the sea, with nothing separating the balcony from the sea.
Litnis Street
Turn left from Safar square when coming from the Horev direction to the Carmel center. Over 20 years ago, me and the man who later became my husband, we went to eat at a restaurant in Sefer Square, called Spaghetti, when we left the restaurant, my car was no longer where I had parked it on Litanis Street. I was very flattered that someone stole my car, when there were so many more attractive cars out there, but no. The former mayor Amram Matsna used to tow cars that were parked in a prohibited manner... That's how we found ourselves on the way to a parking lot to release the car. Compared to the hotels he built on the seashore, it's really insignificant, but still.
When the neighborhood is so beautiful...
I don't see a guideline between the names of the streets in the neighborhood. Yishuv, a biblical figure, a couple who fought for the defense of Haifa in '48, Baron Rothschild - but who needs a guideline when the neighborhood is so beautiful?
According to the Madeleine website, the average price of a unit in the neighborhood is 2.2 million NIS. In August, an apartment on Margalit Street with an area of 79 square meters was sold for 1.69 million NIS. In July, a new 4-room apartment (133 square meters) was sold on Litnis Street at a cost of NIS 3.5 million. Cost per square meter NIS 26,315.
You don't explain why and how the streets got their names. Just a PR and nostalgia article.
If you write about names, it would be appropriate for you to know that the square is called Kiryat Safar Square, one of the names of Jerusalem.
Have the real estate sharks heard about the terrible pollution in Haifa? Cost per square meter is NIS 26,315, lol
It used to be beautiful.
Today it is overcrowded and suffocating with ruined infrastructure.
The apartments there are not worth a quarter of the asking price.
It is a fact that all the millionaires sold and left the puddle, even though they had the right to keep a property in Haifa, they chose to get rid of it and rightly so.
The mayors of Mitsna, Yahav, Kalis destroyed every good part of the city. Today, Haifa has become a day care center for the Arabs of the Galilee and geriatrics.
What about Margalit?
According to the title, the article will explain how the streets got their names. In practice, most of the article deals with gossip or Michal Yaron's personal memories.
I have said in the past regarding the naming of streets in Haifa, who decides a public committee headed by Haifa Mayor Dr. Einat Kalish Rotem. Shabbat Shalom
