The poisonous Nasrallah and Zaharon fish now live in Elozorov • Bat Galim beach in Haifa

The Nasraala and the lion fish continue to populate every available space in our sea, and this time it's the turn of the open Bat Galim beach, where the lion fish has made its home. This is not a single tern, but 9(!) terns observed by Shem, including very young individuals a few centimeters long, that settled in the sunken immigration ship 'Arlozorov', 100 m from the shore.

And what is really so special here? The uniqueness is that the invasion of the Zaharon is almost in full swing. This is the first time I have encountered 9 Zaharon in this area, when it comes to a relatively limited area of 30 m. This is an unprecedented number of Zaharon that I have seen in this section of Haifa.

The fear of the swimmers

This shouldn't bother the swimmers, at this point, since they don't reach the bottom of the sea while swimming, but still, I received several inquiries related to this fish from groups of swimmers active in Bat Galim, and some and some swimmers admitted that they are simply afraid to enter the water after encountering Zaharon, and more, in the groups The various swimmers were even issued with warnings regarding the presence of Haharon in the area.

known for its dangerousness

The haharon fish is, as you remember, considered a dangerous fish due to its venom, and is on the list of dangerous fish. The divers know him, are wary of him and know how to behave when they encounter him, this is also probably the reason for fearing him.

Why did the fish choose Arlozorov as their home?

Well, they have all the biotic and abiotic conditions there to exist. It is known that sunken ships or iron scraps attract a wide variety of sea creatures - fish, shellfish, octopuses, squids, for example sepia and more. The place offers a hiding place and a source of food, and from a biotic point of view, it has all the conditions. Young and mature stingrays find shelter among the rusty fragments, and serve as another link in the food chain. Therefore, on the Arlozorov ship there is a greater concentration of zahrons than in the breakwaters.

the spaces of the ship

Inside the hidden spaces of the ship there are also large individuals of this fish, which are more active during the hours of darkness, at sunset and at sunrise, so they also dare to approach the breakwaters.

They are already here

Is there anything to be done about Hazaron's presence here? The answer is - they are already here. Whoever invaded here is expected to stay. The thing that can be done is to thin out their population. But the authorities, who are supposed to protect nature, declared the hahron fish a protected species that should not be harmed, neither in the reserve nor outside the reserve. This is a completely wrong decision, since, immigrants like the haharon are known as predators who have almost no enemies, certainly in the Mediterranean Sea, and they have a large appetite and a huge mouth opening, which with a quick movement of the mouth opening, of less than one hundredth of a second, is able to swallow dozens of fish of the size suitable for its body, in a violent way Totally the biological balance in the Mediterranean Sea. Local fish species may be very significantly affected by this lunatic, and eventually the haharon may become a fish that dominates the bottom area of the sea.

only a matter of time

In addition to this, a large number of Zaharon may push people away from reaching the beaches, yes, at the moment everything is fine, but it is not a question of "if" but of "when", until there are casualties, and then the question will arise, why do we keep fish from invading the Red Sea ( such as Hazaron and Nasrallah) and do not cancel the ban on fishing for them. It should be noted and warned fishermen who may not be familiar enough with this fish, that if it happens to come across their line, it may sting them, in addition to the fact that, as mentioned, it is considered a violation of the law of catching a protected fish.

remove it from the list

It should be removed immediately from the list of protected fish in the Mediterranean Sea, due to its nature and danger and also due to the fact that it is a migrant to the Sepsian (Sufian Sea).

Bad for the locals

In addition to this, several small groups of Nasrallah fish were observed in the area of the scattered breaks of the Arlozorov and also in the breakwater bordering the Haifa Navy. It's nice for science, but bad for the local animal population.

Undeclared nature reserve

Bat Galim became an undeclared nature reserve, which emphasizes the fact that there is no need to declare nature reserves in the sea, since the life there takes care of itself impressively. Nature takes care of itself and there is no need to push and interfere with this by declaring additional reserves. As evidence, the amount of animals (which I have not yet written about here) such as the Mediterranean lobots and also a number of invasive species that are not so significant in disturbing the balance, such as the fin whales (elsia grandifolua) and hornbills of various species, some from the Sufi Sea and some from the Mediterranean. What was seen on the surface of Bat Galim became the habitat for its large number of charming marine creatures, such as the gizzard fish and the Aspirana fish and even the barracuda fish that were observed far from the Bat Galim shores, but still in the area of the bay.

Bat Galim

In addition to all of this, the southern side of Bat Galim is lined with beautiful asparagus algae, which although it should be noted that they create ecological damage, but until then, add to the beautiful underwater landscape of Bat Galim. (in the picture)

  1. hello light
You are right, an invasive fish needs to disappear from the map and quickly. There are other species that will arrive, and we must take care of them and not automatically protect them, because their harm will be bad for humans. And the bodies must come to their senses immediately, we will not reach a situation of...we told you, and it will happen.
    Happy holiday.

  2. Urgent, destroy these poisonous fish Zaharon and Nasrallah, why are fish protected, why wait for them to multiply and for someone to harm them, God forbid. They pose a risk to humans and a fear of bathers and many fish species may be harmed and eaten, which will disturb the balance in marine nature. We must act and immediately on the issue.

  3. Thanks for the interesting articles
I understand that there are more attractive beaches for diving in terms of their fauna
But if it is possible to review the southern beaches of Haifa, those that have neither lagoons nor breakwaters, but have many bathers. We would love to know what is or isn't even there. Thank you.

  4. Really infuriating, every time when a living creature is discovered that harms the quality of people's lives, some shrill group arrives, who prefer to sacrifice the public's health, this is also true for wild boars, who thanks to those groups make the lives of the residents in Haifa bitter, and regarding The above-mentioned fish simply get rid of them.

  5. Bat Galim has a population of regular swimmers. Including a population of elderly people who come every day. Disabled people who enter through the stairs, children, babies and more. This is also our home beach. We are scared, please take the dangerous fish away

  6. An elderly woman was bitten. by a big fish at Bat Galim beach. A week ago. ..a lot of blood came out..she was taken to the emergency room. In Rambam..something should be done about the fish there...it wasn't like that before. It was possible to bathe and swim without getting injured

  7. An important article. Well done Motty Mendelsohn. Times for Simcha. Simcha and Shashon.

  8. There are a lot of fish at Bat Galim beach..they bite...unpleasant...something needs to be done...an elderly woman was bitten and injured and taken to the ER...a week ago

  9. Fascinating and beautiful article as usual. In the personal context Eilat fish are chasing me. Moti ! In the next dive you will try to bring an item that will convince the doubters that it is the immigration ship "Chaim Arlozorov", the one on which I wrote one of my stories...
