This morning (Mon. 02/08/21) a patrol ship of the Spanish Navy Rayo docked in the port of Haifa
The ship Rayo was launched on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, under the auspices of the Spanish Minister of Defense Carma Chacon, and then continued its construction process on the water. It was handed over to the Spanish Navy on October 26, 2011 at the Bruta Naval Base, in a ceremony presided over by Constantino Mendez, Minister of Foreign Affairs for Defense, and Manuel Rabolo, Chief of Staff of the Navy.
She is the second ship of the Meteor class, a new type of maritime patrol vessels created for the Spanish Navy and called BAMs.
Its main tasks are:
- Protection and escort of other ships in low intensity/asymmetric combat situations
- Maritime traffic control
- Controlling and neutralizing terrorism and piracy
- Actions against drug trafficking and human trafficking
- search and rescue
- Support in crisis situations and humanitarian aid
- Supervision of fishing laws
- Control of environmental and anti-pollution legislation.
- A modular design allows the ships to be modified for purposes outside of primary missions such as hydrographic research, intelligence gathering, diving support and rescue operations.
