Cleaning tar by hand

The Haifaites gathered on Saturday morning, 07/11/2015, got hammers, chisels and pickaxes in their hands and knelt on the beach rocks to clean them of the tar blocks.

The entire operation was planned and managed by the researchers of the Seas and Lakes Research Institute, who joined forces with the "Our Sea" project.

Tar cleaning - Omer Karmi interviews the researcher Dor Adelist

Tar from the 60s

Generation Edelist, a doctoral student at the Sea and Lake Research Institute, explained to our reporter Omar Karmi that the tar accumulated on the rocks about 40 years ago and has been there ever since.
Edelist also adds that tar that accumulates on sea sand erodes and disappears, but there is no similar erosion on the beach rocks, and therefore the tar that accumulated here in the 60s and 70s, remains stuck to the rocks. In those years there was no enforcement on the oil ships and they threw the oil residues from the tanks straight into the sea. Today this phenomenon is rare, the day that oil tankers are enforced.

The lumps of tar that were peeled from the rocks were collected in large sacks and piled near the Sea and Lake Research Institute, from where they were later collected for removal to Ramat Hovav.
