So, Jaws in Israel? Definately not
In the 70s (of the last century), the film "Jaws", based on a book written by Peter Benchley, was released around the world.
This film "succeeded" in causing serious damage to sharks, which manifested itself in wild fishing and unrestrained hunting of these "killer" creatures - a harsh image that stuck to them and does injustice to this wonderful animal, one of the most beautiful in the sea.

Not all sharks attack humans. In fact, the vast majority of them really aren't. And to be even more precise, you can count on one hand the number of shark species that are dangerous to humans.
30,000 teeth
The shark is a beautiful, elegant animal with noble movement. The skeleton of the shark is different from that of other fish, due to being made of cartilage, which gives it wonderful flexibility of movement. Its body structure has an admirable aerodynamic shape and in addition to its perfect shape, the shark has a miraculous ability to grow teeth. For every tooth that falls out to a shark, it grows a new one, so sharks replace about 30,000 teeth during their lifetime.
As you can see in the photos here, the teeth of the sharks are extremely sharp. Some of them are gripping teeth and some are cutting teeth.

Some believe that the shark has to turn over to eat, but this is a myth. To hunt, the shark raises its snout and its upper jaw is pulled forward slightly. This is especially noticeable in the Hamletz species, the same star of the infamous "Jaws" movie.

The body of sharks is covered with hard scales. In the past, in some parts of the world, shark skin was used to make shoes, bags, belts and sandpaper. In the Far East, shark fins are used to make fin soup, which is considered a lust food. Just to explain the ear: in order to take their fins from the sharks, they would capture them, their fins were removed from them and they were thrown into the sea helpless, without any ability to save themselves and thus they would die a death of agony. Cruelty without limits.

For the avoidance of doubt: sharks are a protected species and it is strictly forbidden to harm them in any way. So much for a general introduction.
In Israel also live several species of sharks and their close relatives, some of which are called in popular slang "sea cats" due to their long tails.
At the Hadera power station, at the mouth of the stream and at the outlet of the station's cooling water, many sharks of the fin and gray shark species, both of which are not dangerous to humans, sometimes gather. This year especially many sharks arrived in this area.

The amount of sharks that arrive at the power plant attracts hundreds of curious people who want to witness these beautiful animals, but the important thing that is forgotten here is that it is not a pet, but a wild animal that should not be disturbed in any way. People touch them, feed them, try to ride them...

Let me ask it this way: would you try to ride a rottweiler or a pit bull? Of course the question is unnecessary, and the answer is one: no! If so, also about a shark - no. The sharks are indeed cute and quite gentle, but as I said before, this is a wild animal, which may react with a bite, if only as an act of self-defense. One case is enough to cause a media threat to these magnificent creatures, and it's a shame.

In my many years of work in researching the world's water basins, I dived, swam and photographed dozens, if not hundreds, of sharks, I met them in the Mediterranean Sea, the Adriatic Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. I never felt threatened by any of the many species of sharks I encountered. I researched them a lot, but I always knew how to respect them and all sea creatures wherever they are.

In Israel, in specific places, sharks live and visit, usually several times a year. I would emphasize that accurate publication of the points they reach, may cause them to stop coming, due to the large number of visitors and the curious.
A huge amount of dead fish
The sharks protect themselves with the help of their sharp teeth built in several rows.
The question arises, why do the sharks even come to these places, right near the estuary? The answer is - huge amounts of dead kipon (mullet) fish, a hearty meal and for free.

The sharks get there, because the bottom of the stream is covered with huge amounts of dead fish. Piles of fish that reach up to a height of about forty centimeters from the ground. Right at the mouth of the stream, recently, as mentioned, a large number of sharks were observed feasting their hearts on kipon fish.

Why did the fish die there? Well, the reason is not a phenomenon of lack of oxygen, as many claim, but another reason, what exactly is it? This should be asked of bodies dealing with such cases... the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Society for the Protection of Nature. And how not? The RTG. I suggest that they definitely check. In this specific case, the answer is unequivocal - fish are dying in large numbers - and they are the ones who bring the sharks to the place.

I'm just saying that if they've already bothered to close the area to visitors and there are representatives of the police and the municipality to enforce the ban on entering the water, there is room for total enforcement, including everyone.

A small point that is very important to note: during a shark eating binge, it is highly recommended not to be around them.
There are other places in Israel where sharks come like they come to Hadera, but these require swimming or diving to the site, and that's a good thing.
Have a nice weekend everyone

The municipality of Hadera gave a response - the cause of death of the fish in the area:
This is a natural process that occurs every year. During this period the algae in the stream grow and they are the ones that cause the fish to lose oxygen. The currents in the stream carry the fish to the sea, where some survive and some die. Such a natural process cannot be interfered with. It is possible that this year more debris came through the streams and accordingly, more sharks arrived than every year.
Hello Hagit, and thank you for the kind words.
Indeed there are no dental clinics for sharks, they have many other wonderful properties.
And their presence in our area indicates relatively clean water.
So the sharks will never need a dentist? Great article dear Muti, thank you very much for the wonderful information
It is very interesting why RTG and the Ministry of Environmental Protection do not investigate in depth and do not publish a serious report with the results of the water test on the spot. I wonder if they are protecting someone, and in light of the article about "The Nature Authority and the Contributors", I would not be surprised if it turns out that there is a polluting factor here that contributes to RTG directly or indirectly. I wonder....
Shabbat Shalom Irit and thank you very much.
Shabbat Shalom Irit and thank you very much.
Many thanks to Moti, as always fascinating stories, and great knowledge. Happy Saturday everyone.
What a beautiful article. with a mature attitude. I wish the article would reach the entire Israeli public and its awareness.
Hello Shay.
There are more sharks in the eastern Mediterranean than there were a decade ago. And tons of bats. The sea is much cleaner, which is good for everyone and also for the sharks, who despite their threatening appearance will not reach places where there is chemical or organic pollution. Despite their resistance to infections.
As I said in the article, there are other places where I photograph sharks in Israel several times a year. And I do not reveal these places because of the tendency to close these places downright.
Hi Jana.
Thanks so much for your response.
There are indeed phenomena in which an abundance of algae together with high water temperatures cause a lack of oxygen and the death of fish. But in this case I measured the temperature and patrolled the length of the stream, and there is another reason, and there are the bodies I mentioned, which are supposed to give answers.
And in the world there are cases of sharks that arrive not far away acting like slaughterhouses, and there are species that are dangerous to humans.
In this case the situation is different.
Really interesting. Now I know that the sharks come not only from a lot of fish in the area and not only from the warming of the water by the power plant, but it turns out that fish are dying...
But it's interesting, the abundance of algae in the stream is a symbol of the abundance of pollution and that's not good... Please check!
Nature's pity!
The article is very interesting!
Reasonable article.
But stop shaming rottweilers and pit bulls, they are both amazing and wonderful breeds.
Humans are bad, not dogs.
Very interesting Moti dear man
Very interesting article. The world of sharks is a very fascinating subject. educational. thanks muti
very interesting
Thanks
Shabbat Shalom
Interesting article as always. Regarding the sharks in Hadera, there is indeed a danger of entering the water. It's really lucky that so far no one has been bitten, because as you wrote.... God forbid, if someone had been hurt, there would have been a media attack on them and good enforcement of the ban on entering the water.
From conversations with divers I heard that in recent years there are more encounters with sharks in open water than in the past. Do you have an idea why?
Thanks
It was very interesting.
The pictures are amazing
Thank you Muti
