Invitation to a guided tour of Bat Galim Beach - Jane's Walks - Saturday 2/5/15

Much has been said and written about surfers' struggles to preserve Haifa's beaches, but how do things look on the ground through the surfers' eyes? What is the importance of the breakwater? What's going on with the surfers club? What danger does a breakwater or a rock on the beach pose to a surfer? Why are the surfers at a different point every time and how is it related to the direction of the wind and the waves? How does the Allenby Exchange affect the spirit regime? Why do surfers object to docks and spurs in the water? What plans endanger the future of this beach? Where is this sport developing and what needs will there be for the next Olympics?
We will learn about these questions and more in this unique and one-time tour, guided by Haifa surfers.

Saturday, 02/05/2015. Departure at 11:00 from the casino plaza in Bat Galim, in front of the beach ice cream parlor. The tour is slow and experiential and suitable for all ages, including families with children.
The tour is free of charge. The facilitators are volunteers.

Jane's Walks is a nickname for an annual festival of guided walking tours, held in many cities around the world, in the first week of May, every year. The tours are named after a well-known urban planning researcher named Jane Jacobs, who passed away on 25/04/2006. Various lectures are held in each "walk", in diverse fields, relating to the same city or neighborhood. The tours are organized free of charge, by volunteers, and describe the neighborhood from the subjective point of view of the guides.

Bat Galim Beach is a beach that stretches from the Navy Yard, in the northeast, to the Sea and Lake Research Institute, in the southwest.

This stretch of beach is the "finger of Carmel" and has many unique features that distinguish it from the other beaches in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea.
One of the outstanding features of this strip is the regime of winds, currents and waves, which create unique and rare surfing conditions and attract many surfers from Israel and the world.
On this tour, we will leisurely ride together along the beach, from the casino area to the church beach.
During the tour we will hear the story of the beach through the eyes of surfers.
We will stop at several stations along the way and hear about their unique characteristics and the struggles that took place around those points - conservation struggles and planning aspects.
