Every year I really looked forward to Hanukkah 
Also for the Hanukkah fees I received from Grandma Sally, a box containing the best sweets from her store in Talpiot Market 
But, not only.

Not only that, because I really liked the lighting of the candles, the blessings and the singing in the evening. 
Mother listened to "Pina for the mother and the child", learned the songs and taught us all. 

I really liked a dish that my mother made only on Hanukkah.
No. Not donuts. Apfel im Schlafrock
That's what she called him. And I already understood a little German and Yiddish, from the conversations of my mother and grandmother.
I understood that there is a matter here with apples. 

Mother explained to me that the translation is actually very simple: an apple in a dressing gown or an apple in a nightgown. 
"And why that name?" I asked
Mom immediately answered, "Let's make it together,
Perhaps you can explain to me the reason.'

We went down to the Talpiot market, mother only bought the apples at Abram's stand, the stand in front of Grandma's store. He kept big green apples for her. 
Mom filled the orange plastic basket with apples, potatoes, flour, oil and of course sweets. 
We went up Sirkin Street to the bus stop leading home, to Bar Giora Street.

Mother started preparations for the holiday.
And me, waiting for my big moment. The meeting with the sweet pancakes.
Mom and I have similar aprons. 
Mom embroidered her and my names on the apron.
I belted the apron and we started the craft.

Mom has a small black notebook
In small round letters she wrote the recipe she got from her grandmother.
Together we prepared exactly this dish that looks very similar to latex. A bit of a cheat. 
Get ready for a salty taste and here it is... this sweet sweet, with its intoxicating and addictive taste.

On the eve of Hanukkah, I receive WhatsApp messages from my children: "Mom, send a recipe for Apfel im Schlafrock.
We want to prepare to light a candle for our friends."

The apple fritters in a robe are part of our candle lighting menu, and they are handed down from generation to generation.
Grandma and mother must be satisfied.

And here is the recipe:

Materials:
5 apples cut, sliced ​​or diced
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
2 tablespoons of sugar 
1 vanilla sugar
2 cups of flour
1 cup of milk
1 Eshel
egg

preparation: 
Mix the dry ingredients. 
Add milk and butter, and an egg.
Mix with a hand mixer.
Slice the apples into thin slices, dip in the batter.
Soak for about ten minutes.
Fry the apples on both sides and after they have browned a little, take them out and place them on absorbent paper.

Serve with powdered sugar
