The food that arrived was dark to drive away
We came to banish darkness….
Yes, Alta, a cloud has covered our lives in recent times.
The holiday of light is coming and what is better than delicious foods to bring light and drive away the darkness? (besides the vaccinations)
Who has ever heard the name: Apfel im Schlafrock?
Every year I really looked forward to Hanukkah
Also for the Hanukkah fees I received from Grandma Sally, a box containing the best sweets from her store in Talpiot Market
But, not only.
Not only that, because I really liked the lighting of the candles, the blessings and the singing in the evening.
Mother listened to "Pina for the mother and the child", learned the songs and taught us all.
I really liked a dish that my mother made only on Hanukkah.
No. Not donuts. Apfel im Schlafrock
That's what she called him. And I already understood a little German and Yiddish, from the conversations of my mother and grandmother.
I understood that there is a matter here with apples.
Mother explained to me that the translation is actually very simple: an apple in a dressing gown or an apple in a nightgown.
"And why that name?" I asked
Mom immediately answered, "Let's make it together,
Perhaps you can explain to me the reason.'
We went down to the Talpiot market, mother only bought the apples at Abram's stand, the stand in front of Grandma's store. He kept big green apples for her.
Mom filled the orange plastic basket with apples, potatoes, flour, oil and of course sweets.
We went up Sirkin Street to the bus stop leading home, to Bar Giora Street.
Mother started preparations for the holiday.
And me, waiting for my big moment. The meeting with the sweet pancakes.
Mom and I have similar aprons.
Mom embroidered her and my names on the apron.
I belted the apron and we started the craft.
Mom has a small black notebook
In small round letters she wrote the recipe she got from her grandmother.
Together we prepared exactly this dish that looks very similar to latex. A bit of a cheat.
Get ready for a salty taste and here it is... this sweet sweet, with its intoxicating and addictive taste.
On the eve of Hanukkah, I receive WhatsApp messages from my children: "Mom, send a recipe for Apfel im Schlafrock.
We want to prepare to light a candle for our friends."
The apple fritters in a robe are part of our candle lighting menu, and they are handed down from generation to generation.
Grandma and mother must be satisfied.
And here is the recipe:
Materials:
5 apples cut, sliced or diced
½ teaspoon of cinnamon
2 tablespoons of sugar
1 vanilla sugar
2 cups of flour
1 cup of milk
1 Eshel
egg
preparation:
Mix the dry ingredients.
Add milk and butter, and an egg.
Mix with a hand mixer.
Slice the apples into thin slices, dip in the batter.
Soak for about ten minutes.
Fry the apples on both sides and after they have browned a little, take them out and place them on absorbent paper.
Serve with powdered sugar
A bright and happy holiday
And you passed down the recipe from generation to generation
A holiday of light, joy and great miracles🙌
Go Hannah and all the dear family.
Definitely going to celebrate with your delicacy
Apple Schlefrock, the nickname for an apple in a coat Schlefrock is a coat in both German and Yiddish, an apple covered in a batter that tastes like a donut
"We came to banish darkness….
Yes, Alta, a cloud has covered our lives in recent times."
Let me clarify what you meant..
As always
Good advice seasoned with stories and flavors. Happy Holidays Hanala.
It's really delicious, thank you.
Thank you Hannah
As allergic to milk and its products
I will not perform exactly
But I expect it to be successful
Great idea and all products are available.
Happy Orim and have a good week
Thanks for sharing the recipe with a family tradition
Also in French they say "in a housecoat" for any frying with flour from Adna apples or apples
Hannah, I didn't know you but it looks very tasty and different. You are preparing to make apples in your pajamas from your family tradition.
Dear Hana, you don't have to... a well full of sweet stories of a special childhood...
Yes, there will be many and a sweet and bright holiday
Lovely recipe and thanks for the recipe
Hello to Hannah. You really moved me. With us, the apples in a dressing gown were a food all year round, especially dinners. But it was prepared in a pan where first the Grand Alexander apples were fried until golden and then my mother poured the batter which was similar to the Blinches recipe, when one side was golden then turned to the other side and sprinkled sugar and turned again. The most delicious food in the world. I of course continue in her path and I am sure that future generations will continue as well. By the way, the name originates in Austria.
You are adorable Hana. A wonderful story and the recipe sounds and looks very delicious.
For an apple in a "robe", (the translation from German)? At my mother's/grandmother's house, was there Hanukkah like that all year? Because it was a dessert, very well-known, delicious of course, at ours we liked the fruit salad alongside it, (each according to his taste) before that we put lentil soup, with cut sausages, or alternatively , the long henk, I forgot his name, sorry, they buy it dried like this. Cut, and heat together. followed by the aforementioned dessert. My friends, no more is needed. Satisfied and satisfied. Do you miss this meal? Enjoy, those who want to invest a little
Thank you Hana Moorg.
This year I will also make apples in my pajamas.
Happy holiday.
