At the age of 94 Hulda Gurevich "The Angel in White" and "Mother of the Wounded" inaugurated the new Rambam Promenade that was announced in her name in Haifa, while she was alive
In the shadow of the corona virus crisis, the moving ceremony took place in the presence of members of Gurevich's immediate family, a few close friends, a representative of the IDF from the naval wing of the Navy, the mayor of Haifa Dr. Einat Kalish Rotem, deputy mayor Nachshon Tzuk, city council member Sigal Zionist, Director of the Urban Holocaust Institute Momi Almog and Rabbi Shlomo Haim Leeson - a Chabad emissary in Western Carmel, who has accompanied Hula for many years.
Her life is giving
Hulda Gurevich, who for decades was called the "angel in white" and the "mother of the wounded" received today (Wednesday, 16/9/20) a great and enormous honor that very few had before her in the city of Haifa and in Israel in general ● Gurevich is a huge personality whose whole life is giving to the community, when it does so simply and modestly. She dealt with the values and love of the country all her life.
An exciting ceremony
Hulda Gurevich, now 94 years old, removed the plaque this evening (Wednesday, 16/9/20) from the sign that will bear her name on the new boardwalk in the Bat Galim neighborhood in Haifa. The Municipal Names Committee, Historical Signage and Dears of the City of Haifa, decided at the beginning of March this year (2020) to commemorate the name of Mrs. Hulda Gurevich while she was still alive.
The blessing of Rabbi Shlomo Chaim Leeson and the blowing of the shofar
"The Children of a Rat"
Among those honoring Huldah at the moving ceremony was Momi Almog, currently the director of the "Urban Holocaust Institute", who told the "Hai Fe" news reporter: "It was very emotional tonight at the ceremony. Huldah, she is a mother to me and to a group of musical artists who accompanied Huldah since the 1970s. Even when we were children and also teenagers, Huldah collected us and made sure that we appeared in every possible situation, in hospitals on holidays, in IDF bases on special events and in short, where not? We were called "Hulda's children" and all with tremendous giving for others and the community. A huge personality, I wish her a lot of good health, strong and firm and that she will have many more beautiful years."
Blowing a shofar
It should be noted that at the end of the ceremony, Rabbi Shlomo Haim Leeson blew the shofar a loud blast for the new year and also when removing the lot from the boardwalk sign, he also said the blessing "Shah Hainuin".
Hulda Gurevich congratulates "that we have lived"
Who doesn't know a rat?
If there is anyone in the city of Haifa who does not know you Hulda Gurevich, we will tell you that Gurevich was born in Atlit on 2/1/1926. Her grandparents Gabriel and Tova Shapira were pioneers, one of the founders of the colony. Her parents Hana and Dov Hoffman were among the founders of the salt company.
As a child, her family participated in the smuggling of immigrants to Israel. Her father would take them down by swimming to the beach, her mother and the women of the "Salt Company" prepared food, clothes and equipment for them, while Huldah and her brother volunteered to donate toys and games.
In her youth she was sworn to defense, and in the War of Independence she was at the headquarters of the special company that fought to liberate the city of Haifa. In her fighting, she was in the positions of gunner and liaison and was one of the only women who was in the battle area in the city.
Always initiated a volunteer activity
Gurevich always initiated her own voluntary activity, with her presence standing out above all in the crossings at the time such as "Sha'ar Aliya" and "Mahana David" where she gave the children sports lessons, the Bible and the knowledge of Haaretz.
With the establishment of the IDF, Gurevich volunteered for the Navy and was one of the first four girls in this corps.
For many years she cared for wounded soldiers at the army base in Bat Galim. Upon her release from the IDF, she worked at a youth club and continued volunteering to receive immigrants and help families in distressed neighborhoods. In 1954, she married attorney Ben Ami Gurevich, a scion of the founders of Rosh Pina. In his office, the two combined social activities because her husband believed that non-Arab peoples in the Middle East, such as Druze, Circassians, Alawites, Maronites and Copts, should be taken care of, so that Israel does not remain isolated.
The two founded the "Le Merhav" association, within the framework of which they worked for these communities. Ten years after their marriage, Ben Ami died.
Countless awards and honors
For her many years of work, Gurevich won many awards and various recognitions, in which she was awarded in 1977 the "President's Medal for a Volunteer" in the field of security, and in 1993 she was awarded the high and coveted title of "Darling of the City of Haifa" for her devotion to her tasks and love of the country, "Protector of the Minister of Health" For volunteering, for exemplary dedication and for the love of man and others, the "Zamman Isha" award for a female character in Haifa for an extraordinary personal effort, a certificate of appreciation for Menachem Begin for her life's work in caring for the wounded of the IDF and children of the IDF, many certificates of appreciation from The Association for the Soldier" and much more.
Israel Award for Lifetime Achievement
Meanwhile, it should be noted that in 2011 she was also awarded the "Israel Prize for Lifetime Achievement" for her unique contribution and activity to society and the country. Hulda Gurevich dedicated her life to helping others and for the sake of Israeli society, and did so completely voluntarily and self-financed. There is no Haifai who did not know her when she would come every day dressed all in white to visit and feed the wounded and disabled IDF soldiers who were hospitalized in Rambam and Military Hospital 10 and Convalescent Home 3. Among other things, she was active in helping to absorb Aliyah, promoting youth, Youth for volunteering, helping minorities, bringing hearts together in Israeli society, giving lectures for Israel and above all giving broad assistance to the security system, soldiers, the wounded, the disabled and bereaved families.
I have known Huldah since 1975, I worked as an assistant at the Ilanot Kindergarten, and she would visit the kindergartens and collect bags of candy for the soldiers before the holidays, which the children would bring as well as from other kindergartens, and on soldiers' birthdays, she would collect kishus to celebrate with them. When my son was a soldier, he was in a hospital, Rambam had him jaundice, and a rat came with a group of children who played for them to make them happy. I even have a picture of you and the kindergarten I worked at, and whenever I meet her we talk sales and her family deserves a promenade named after her.
A worthy decision to hold the ceremony and call the promenade after her.
Where are there other characters like the special woman Sue?!
