The Gordon Academic College for Education and Teaching, Haifa, won a call from the Ministry of Education, to train engineers to teach technological subjects in secondary schools, for grades 7-10.
The program, which will open as early as March 2020, is intended for a mixed group of engineers from various specialties, such as: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, industry and management and construction. The students who will study in it are entitled to a conditional loan, in the amount of 11,600 NIS, to participate in the financing of tuition fees. Engineers who successfully complete this program will be entitled to complete a bachelor's degree in engineering, in one year only.
The students will learn, as part of the training for teaching technological subjects, in the secondary schools, practical courses to study teaching topics in a future-oriented environment, teaching methods in the classroom and practical experience. There will also be required training in safety and first aid. The studies will be held for four semesters, one to one and a half days a week. Upon completion, the graduates of the program will be integrated, in the education system, as specialized teachers, as part of a one-year internship workshop.
Prof. Yehezkel Teller, President of the Gordon Academic College for Education and Teaching, Haifa:
The Ministry of Education issued the call, due to a lack of quality teachers, for the training of technological professions. This is an unprecedented opportunity for engineers to expand their horizons and their employment options, and to receive training to be teachers of technological subjects, in the high schools as well as in the schools for technicians and engineers. In the high-tech industry, which lacks more than 15 thousand engineers every year, the accessibility of technology professions, already from high school age, is equally important. Training by teachers, who have gained professional experience in this world, can help, especially, in making the subject technologically accessible to students. We thank the Ministry of Education for choosing us to train future teachers in these fields.

And what will be the expected salary for those hi-tech workers who will move to teaching? This is very interesting.... If there was adequate compensation for teachers in our country - I would have been involved in it a long time ago.... Unfortunately - we are still far from that in Israel... if you want to make a serious plan - let the teaching staff be rewarded accordingly...
