On Tuesday 07/01/2020 in the morning hours a report was received of white foam emitted by the high waves onto the beach. The foam phenomenon is a phenomenon I have known for years of marine research. This particular phenomenon is the result of the churning of waves of powerful waves crashing on Meridian's coastal reefs. It is true that it is only salt foam, but the authorities did well, when they published the announcement not to enter the sea until the inspection - as they say "what is safe is safe".
This foam is a disturbing phenomenon by all accounts. Foam usually appears if there is some pollution in the sea, but not always. Sometimes, the Nigerian rainwater from the Carmel towards the sea is contaminated with some kind of dirt. The runoff water that is the rainwater washes the urban area and puts insect oils and more into the sea. Before entering the sea, it is advisable to wait several days until the drift settles or is ejected.
From a preliminary test I carried out in the field, it appears that in today's case it is not detergents or any harmful substance. The foam in my hand disappeared in the blink of an eye. The air bubbles burst and no trace of them remained. without any fatty layer. Upon further inspection, no trace of oil was discovered.
I encountered such cases in my work on other beaches as well, but only on rocky beaches where the waves swirl and create the foam.
A slightly dark colored foam appears on tropical days as a result of coral reproduction, in any case you should always wait a few days after the storm subsides
