The destroyer Ahi Eilat, which had the military designation K-40, operated in the service of the Israeli Navy from 1956. Ahi Eilat was sunk in 1967 by Egyptian submarines. In the incident, 47 sailors were killed and 91 were injured.
A flotilla commemorating the martyrs of Eilat took place on Friday, 01/11/19, in Haifa Bay with the participation of about 50 ships and over 300 sailors.
My brother Eilat's memory serves as a lighthouse and landmark in the Navy's heritage. This was the first sinking of a warship at sea by sea-based missiles, in this case Russian Styx missiles.
As a lesson from the event, the Navy changed the concept of combat, and the power building was based on small, fast and sophisticated cruise ships carrying missiles and electronic warfare systems made in Israel.
The Carmel sailing community coordinated the ships of the members and included youth from the officers of the Sea of Acre, Ashdod Sea Ort, Sea Ports, the seamen at Kibbutz Hhoter, Sea Scouts and Zebulon who teamed up for a competitive cruise in exceptional weather conditions.
In a short naval ceremony held in front of the city of Haifa (there is nothing more beautiful than it in the world), strangers were thrown into the sea by Commander Achi Romeh and his crew, as the ships of the flotilla circled around the innovative steel, the families of the shipwrecked, the wounded and the survivors watched the ceremony from the deck of the ship Queen of Acre. He was accompanied by Colonel Bamil David Ben Bashat, the former commander of the Navy and the chairman of the Navy Association, who stands behind the cruise, as it does every year, and honors the families with his presence.
