On Wednesday of next week, the Technion will hold an evening of appreciation in honor of Rabbi Dr. Eliyahu Zaini, who headed the Technion's synagogue for more than 30 years.
Rabbi Zaini is known to the general public for his racist, homophobic and chauvinistic views which he never tried to hide.
The rabbi expressed strong opposition to the opening of the couples' dormitory at the Technion also to same-sex couples and said that "there is no such thing as religious gays." He was quoted as saying that he was "racist in the positive sense" and that non-Jews were in fact inferior.
Referring to women, the rabbi said in the past that a woman is not allowed to conduct a public ceremony that is not addressed to women only.
In the letters sent to the president of the Technion - Prof. Peretz Lavi and the chairman of the student union at the Technion - Danny Magner, it was written that they were asked to honor with their presence an event that cherishes the activity of a person who dismisses such a prominent part of the people they represent.
Tal Goldman, chairman of the Meretz cell at the Technion, responded: "The fact that Rabbi Zaini was part of the Technion family for so many years is a stain on the institution. Even now, the Technion should not honor such a dark person, who spread hatred and intolerance among the students."

Since when is political activity allowed on the territory of the Technion?!
In my time it was out of bounds and it's a shame it didn't stay that way...
As a matter of fact - the members of the MRC, in their hatred for everything that smells of Torah, are the true dark ones. If only they knew the whole range of opinions of the Gaon who dared to speak against him, they would come to 4 and ask for forgiveness. This shallowness of judging a person based on a few of his statements , after they took them out of context with typical nastiness, fits the MRC people like a glove. Let them go look for their friends in Europe or Arab countries, even there they hate settlers, ultra-Orthodox, etc....
May God have mercy on them and their souls
