I am a former colleague of Amos Carmeli, from the years when I served as a writer for "Haaretz" in Haifa (1984-1991).
I remember a particularly gloomy night, in the winter of 1990, when we ran at 03.00 on a rainy and stormy, crowded night, his team and I, on exposed wooden beams along the length of a cargo ship..., "Moran", to interview refugees who were hiding in the belly of the ship "Moran". I'm sure that an article about the refugees hidden on the ship is in the television archive.
Amos was always everywhere, always humane, ethical and honest.
Tomorrow I will come to the conference, after years of watching the affairs of the press from the sidelines - and I wanted to bring to the table of dealing with the issue of the Haifa media a very interesting attempt at the time, of the late mythical mayor Abba Khushi to establish a second, independent television channel, in addition to the first and exclusive channel at the time.
The television station in Haifa was supposed to be built in the southern entrances of the city, financed by a group of investors headed by Haim Topol.
More details in my article "How Haifa almost had an independent TV channel" ("Haaretz", 27.08.80) is attached hereto.
It is also important to note, on the subject of Haifa and the media, that the city's marginalization in the national media coincided with the marginalization of the feminist movement that began to grow anew, in the seventies, in Israel, and the coverage of it was also born in Haifa.
During the seventies, I painstakingly brought up issues such as sexual harassment, the situation in delivery rooms, violence against women in national newspapers - and every article on the subject involved a fight with the editors of the time: "This week you will find a good topic, this week don't mess with these women" I was told in response For attempts to publicize feminist issues.
And yet my articles were published, and those of other journalists who began to wake up to the issue.
A particularly fierce struggle that I waged, through the publication of an article about the treatment of women in delivery rooms "Discoveries from the delivery rooms", (Haaretz" 06.07.1978):
Managers of maternity departments in hospitals across the country have published accusations against me that I am endangering the lives of the mothers by demanding to provide them with painkillers....
It's great to see today that women journalists committed to the issue like Shelly Yachimowitz, Merav Michaeli and others have advanced to the forefront of Israeli politics and it's sad that there are things that haven't changed since then..
