Carmel Hospital: New children's emergency room in Carmel

For the first time since Carmel Hospital was established, a new, spacious and modern pediatric emergency room was inaugurated this week. Over NIS 2.5 million was invested in the new emergency room and it covers almost double the area of ​​the previous emergency room. More examination rooms for children, a new position for an emergency nurse, an increased intensive care room, and even lighting. A special ceiling - Sky Light is friendly and pleasant for children. "The new emergency room will allow us to continue to provide the best pediatric medicine, in conditions and with modern quality suitable for the years 2020," says Prof. Giora Filler, director of the children's department in Carmel.

In the wide and shiny waiting lobby of the new children's emergency room in Carmel, the medical clown "Trejoli" stands and makes the children who are waiting for the doctor's examination laugh, surrounded by wide and colorful armchairs, the ceiling is illuminated with a pleasant light with special 3D images, and the reception desk is decorated in soft and pleasant colors that manages to bring out a sweet smile Even from the sickest children.
"This is not just another construction project at the hospital, explains hospital engineer Moshe Berger, the children's triage project is a one-of-a-kind project, in which we paid attention to every single detail with special emphasis on accessibility and adaptation of the structure and design of the new triage for children and parents.
On average, over 9,000 children pass through the children's emergency room at Carmel Hospital, they come from Zichron Yaakov and Emek Hafer in the south, from the entire Haifa area and the Kiryat to Karmiel in the north Ramat Yishai and Kiryat Tivon.
Children from the age of 0 and a few days after birth, up to adult children at the age of 18.
Dr. Muriel Konopaniki, director of the children's emergency room in Carmel, says that "our uniqueness at the Carmel emergency room is the emphasis on the importance of open and clear communication channels with the patients and their families, and the special relationship with the pediatricians in the community, which allows us to understand the child's overall health status and provide quality and continuous care."
The special design, which includes the use of child-friendly colors, light blue and purple and the other colors of the rainbow, was built by a team of special architects and designers in close coordination with the hospital's engineer Moshe Berger.
The total area of ​​the emergency room was increased to 220 square meters, and for the purpose of the increase, offices and areas that were adjacent to the emergency room were moved to other places in the hospital, to allow more space and space for the benefit of child care.
The new children's emergency room in Carmel includes an upgraded entrance lobby with an adjacent secretary and an inviting desk open to the public. Seating areas with well-padded and comfortable colorful seats, and a changing station for mothers' comfort. The initial investigation of the child's condition is done by a trained nurse in a state-of-the-art triage room, which allows for a quick examination and sorting of the severity of the condition and a quick referral for treatment, examination, or stay. Dr. Konopanki, director of the emergency department, explains.
"We built an especially large intensive care room that contains all the necessary equipment including resuscitation carts, we added a spacious waiting room with beds adapted for children until the doctors' decisions are made. There are 3 examination rooms with separate entrances that allow more children to be seen at the same time. Automatic backup systems including alerts Digitalization of medical oxygen and gases that allow continuous work even during a malfunction. Staff rooms, a modern medicine room, a large doctor's and nurses' station and much more were added. "Our direction is to be more friendly and pleasant for children, while providing separate examination rooms to preserve privacy and provide personal and pleasant service to patients" says Dr. Konopanky.

"Our goal is professional, courteous, quality and fast service, while looking at the children and parents at eye level, and involving the parents and children in the diagnostic and treatment steps. We place great emphasis on reducing pain and also use medical clowns a lot, say Dr. Konopaniki and Prof. Piller. We don't order treatments without explanation, we talk with the children's parents with a common goal of helping the child, and giving him the best treatment under the most pleasant conditions."
In the new emergency room, a large, modern medicine room was built that meets high international standards and enables the administration of a wide variety of medicines, including antibiotic treatments and painkillers as primary treatment without the need for the parents to go to pharmacies.
The emergency room in Carmel is headed by an extended team of children's department that includes professional consultants in many diverse fields such as: neurological consultation by Prof. Nathaniel Tselnik, infectious consultation with Prof. Moshe Efrat, director of the pediatric infections unit. Dr. Natan Ish Shalom consulting in the fields of pediatric nephrology, Dr. Yehuda Hecht with rheumatology and immunology consulting in the fields of allergy. Dr. Yosef Rivlin in the fields of lungs and CF specialization while Carmel Hospital is a regional professional center in the entire north for CF, Prof. Lerner in the field of gastroenterology. Dr. Evelyn Shabad in hematology consultation, Dr. George Wertheimer in pediatric cardiology, Dr. Ilana Koren in endocrinology counseling, Dr. Ayelet Shani in pediatric dermatology and more.
The children's emergency room is staffed by dedicated nurses who have specialized and are constantly upgrading the care of children, the nurses in the children's emergency room in Carmel undergo special trainings and exams that allow them, when necessary, to administer medication without the need for a doctor's order and prescription (OTC) when everything is controlled and monitored. The nursing team in the children's emergency department is led by the nursing director, nurse Fatan Zayadan.
