A million drivers are already subscribed to the Carmel tunnels and it seems that the tunnels have come a long way: a million subscribers have joined the Carmel tunnels since their opening in 2010, according to data published by the Carmelton Group, which owns the concession to operate the Carmel tunnels. According to the group, in December 2018, after 8 years of operation, the company crossed the threshold of one million subscribers.
◄Agreement to reduce fares in the Carmel Tunnels:
As a reminder, at the beginning of 2018, Carmelton and the Ministry of Finance signed an agreement to lower travel rates for private subscribers, in which the transit rate in the Carmel tunnels was reduced by approximately 30%. In light of the benefit, there has been a significant increase in the number of users who have joined as subscribers in the Carmel Tunnels - most of them residents of the area, at the same time as the increase in the scope of their trips.
The benefit joins the existing benefit of 40% for registered light trucks, which, together with the "clean air program", is intended to encourage polluting trucks to pass through the Carmel tunnels instead of the central and congested roads in the Gulf region.
An economic study conducted about a year ago, by the EcoFinance group and presented later in this article, found that as a result of the passage of tens of thousands of vehicles passing through the tunnels every day, a significant decrease of up to 40% was recorded in the traffic loads on the main routes in Haifa during peak hours. The study also found that moving through the tunnels saves the economy about 6.5 million liters of fuel every year and generates an economic benefit of about NIS 300 million a year.
Eran Ben Arush, CEO of the Carmel Tunnels, stated:
"Crossing the threshold of one million subscribers is further evidence of the success of the project, its importance and contribution to Haifa, the surrounding cities and the residents of the entire region. It is difficult to think of transportation in the region today without the tunnels which have improved the quality of life of the residents, saving time, fuel and reducing polluting emissions. The agreement signed with the Treasury To reduce subscription rates by 30% and a 40% discount on the rate for light trucks with subscriptions, allowing optimal utilization of the Carmel tunnels as a national infrastructure project."
